Do you ever watch a film that you wish you liked, but you didn’t?

I Come With the Rain has many plus points. I just didn’t see them. However, looking at it objectively, I will say that it is well-acted, brilliantly shot with varied and interesting effects to increase mood, beautiful scenery that shows you many different parts of Oriental cultures and quite realistic.

Yet, the one word I would sum it up with would be ‘Dull.’ I don’t know what it was about it that didn’t grab me. I like gangster films. I like murder mysteries. This should have been for me. I just found it so uninteresting and slow that I really wanted to turn it off halfway through as I didn’t care about anything that was happening.

People will say that the speed of the film is done to build up tension and they may be right. It has a couple of car chases and shootouts and normally I like these, but, again, I just got bored. Sorry.

WOTF - a complete load of pretentious twaddle. Confusing, confused and rip off of about every film you care to mention; Silence of the Lambs, Seven, Infernal Affairs etc etc.

Miss it off your list you'll die of boredom!!

  • Jaw dropping, intelligent thriller

I was drawn to the film initially, purely on the fact that Anh Hung Trang was set to direct Murakami's 'Norwegian Wood', a book i'd just finished and that time and completely fallen in love with; hence I was curious as to his style and his previous work.

I wasn't a fan of Josh Hartnett at all. He's been in some absolute bilge and, frankly, I wasn't aware that he had any acting talent beyond Michael Bay bilge fests and romcoms that traded on his looks. Here, he's absolutely stunning. Dialogue is sparse, his voice is drenched in black coffee and gravel and his acting just plain resonates.

It helps that he's surrounded by an equally brilliant cast, with the opening moments between Hartnett and the utterly underrated Elias Koteas left me barely breathing, such was the intensity of the atmosphere; a soundtrack coloured with some wonderful Radiohead moments, the 'Bulletproof' scene in particular drenched in perfection; and a director and cinematographer that frame in each moment succinctly.

It's a tough watch - and for those who need an explosion every five minutes and/or Jason Statham twonking about, won't be at home here.

For me, I found a genuine surprise and one of my favourite pieces of cinema this year, which I enjoyed far more than Hang's adaptation of Norwegian Wood.

May I direct you towards another slice of Hartnett brilliance from this year, the fabulously quirky and utterly different 'Bunraku', which shares the same Cinematographer as 'I Come With the Rain' and has a feel of old school Tim Burton.

I wanted to eject this dvd after 20 minutes but stuck it out. All I can say is rubbish acting, rubbish directing and rubbush story line. Anyone who rates this film over 1 star has got terrible taste in movies. In fact it only scrapes by with 1 star. Don't waste your money or time watching it.

This might well become a cult film in time. All the right ingredients are there and very left of centre. The real point about this film is artist meets commerce; a very creative director not hitting the mark because of commercial constraints. But what comes busting out is some stunning shots, atmospheric direction, enigmatic performances and something that stays in the mind. Just don't expect a standard hollywood action movie.

What? Even when I realised that this film isn't shown in chronological order, it still didn't make any sense. I watched it right through to the end hoping that an answer would come but none did. The Blu- Ray version is something like 9 minutes longer and possibly does contain the meaning of this film. Somebody else can find that out though because I'm really not interested.
