Great acting from the two leading men!

First of all, Carrey lookings NOTHING like the real Steve Russell,however I enjoyed his and Macgregor's performances. Thoroughly genuine, it made you laugh and much as it made you cry as well.On a much deeper level, it made me sad to see a man who was given a chance at real love and happiness with his love interest Phillip Morris (Macgregor) yet he could not stop himself from lying and being the con man that he was. One of Carrey's better films in a LONG time, I was particularly surprised at how versatile Macgregor could be as the very lovable,very convincing life partner to Carrey's character, Steve Russell.Well worth a watch. I recommend that you see it: it's really excellent if you're looking for a film that will make you laugh AND cry and will keep you guessing till the very end!- Was this review helpful to you?

By twosoddingcats (214 reviews) from Kingston-upon-Thames , 09 May 2013I always think of Jim Carrey as the kid in school who no one really likes so he tries too hard to be liked but he then comes over as desperate. I hate Jim Carrey as an actor. He over exaggerates facial movements to inspire comedy but I remain unmoved by his efforts. He’s one of those actors who really annoys me – he’s my marmite. But I rented this DVD because other people convinced me it’s really funny and because Euan McGregor is in it and Euan is a brilliant actor who manages to mesmerise the audience. The two directors (who also wrote the script) and the other fellow actors are not to blame here; for me the film would have been so much better with Carrey replaced by a more charismatic and believeable actor. Essentially, Carrey is a con man (based on a true story) who falls in love with McGregor and cons his way into a lavish lifestyle to please McGregor (who ironically isn’t interested in money, only in being with Carrey). Inevitably, the law catches up with both of them but Carrey manages to slip and out of prison infuriating the authorities so much that the final time he’s caught, he’s given an unprecedented life sentence for fraud. The End. *The low star rating is due to Carrey who ruins the film for me- McGregor does an excellent job as always.- Was this review helpful to you?

More than I expected..
