An interesting meatball

A pretty good film all round, this number. Kevin Kline is fantastic as the womanising, pasta scoffing, pizza throwing object on Tracy Ullman's affection and assassination attempts following her discovery on of her husbands not so discreet frollicking. Joan Plowright as her mother is particular funny and curiously adept at bumping people off in what looks like freak accidents. River Phoenix does well as a hippy whimp inexplicably attracted to middle aged frumpy house wife Ullman who helps her in her atttempts to make Kline swim with the fishes. Hurt and Reeves are the washed up and occassionally hilarious but useless assassins that are dragged out of their local bar by the lure of crumpled bankotes to carry out the terrible deed. Basically, an amusing film, well acted and written, plenty of laughs, ECT. This review has gone on too long, enjoy.- Was this review helpful to you?

When she discovers this, she plots with her Yugoslav mother to have her husband killed….with the help of lovesick co-worker River Phoenix and two incompetent hit men (William Hurt and Keanu Reeves- who take a taxi to the crime scene!). The problem is, no matter how many times they try to bump him off, he keeps on pulling through. This is actually based on a true story and the directors son has a small part as the Ullman’s son. Delicious, dry comedy at its best with extra pepperoni and cheese.- Was this review helpful to you?

Die laughing.

Kevin Kline plays Joey, a womanising pizza parlour owner who lives with his wife Rosalie (Tracey Ullman), and his mother-in-law Nadja (Joan Plowright). Kline's Italian accent is slightly atrocious, but his pizza throwing, tight-trousered, bottom-wiggling impersonation of the character is very funny indeed. Even funnier is Joan Plowright as the disapproving mother-in-law. Joan has played Italian women before and she is very, very good at it. When she's on the screen, all eyes are on her.
Tracey is spot on as the adoring but boring wife who is blind to Joey's goings-on, and River Phoenix is perfect as the young boy who gets drawn into the situation because he loves Rosalie.
The whole attempted murder thing is hilarious. It may not be Shakespeare, but it's really funny and a great film to cheer you up.- Was this review helpful to you?

Still a very good movie!

The relationship between Mama Naja and Joey is hilarious and Harlon and Marlon well what can I say......reggie, reggie reggie! :)- Was this review helpful to you?

Not as good as I remember it

I'm now not sure if it was my lack of knowledge about what makes a good movie or just that I was watching it when a much younger person with different views and perpsectives.
This time around instead of laughing at Kevin Kline and Keanu Reeves I found myself getting annoyed at Tracey Ullman.

River, what WERE you thinking?

First, the plot had no originality in it what so ever. Second, in the films blurb you are lead to believe that the wife tries numerous times to bump her husband off for being a serial cheat but in reality there were...er... two attempts!
The characters were more bogus than brilliant;
I have never really rated Keanu Reeves as an actor(sorry but I don't) but in this car crash he was the best one.
Usually River Phoenix has that quality of sucking you into the film, making you feel as though you knew his character but in this he was quite flat. I just didn't believe that he was hippy/fortune teller who works in an Italian restaurant who is head over hills in love with his boss' wife. The wife's mother was also in a completely different league.
Oh, but if you DO watch this film make sure yoy watch the ending, I dare you not to laugh at how unrealistic it is.- Was this review helpful to you?
