I Married A Witch

In seventeenth century New England, witch burning was all the rage, and puritan Jonathan Wooley (Fredric March) helps convict Jennifer (Veronica Lake) and her father Daniel (Cecil Kellaway) of sorcery. They are put to death but not before Jennifer places a curse on Wooley's family line - they will forever be unlucky in love. Cut to 270 years later when a lightning bolt releases their spirits from beneath an old oak tree, Jennifer and Daniel happen upon a party celebrating the marriage of Wallace Wooley to the daughter of a newspaper baron played Susan Hayward, they wreak havoc on Wooley's plans as he falls under Jennifer's spell. I Married A Witch has been acknowledged as the inspiration for the classic television show Bewitched, directed by Rene Clair this is a delightfully wacky, romantic comedy that helped turn Veronica lake into a short lived, but long remembered Hollywood star.

This sparkling comedy fantasy was one of the films French director René Clair made in Hollywood during his wartime exile. The story — about a witch who is reincarnated in order to persecute the descendant of the judge who condemned her to be burned at the stake 300 years earlier — gives Veronica Lake the opportunity to escape typecasting as a sultry femme fatale, and she shows real flair for this sort of whimsy. The fact that the descendant, played by Fredric March, is running for political office is curiously prescient of the McCarthy witch-hunts that occurred some five years later.

Delightful romantic comedy fantasy which shows all concerned at the top of their form. Hollywood moonshine, impeccably distilled.

    Delightful romantic comedy fantasy

I'm sure there are many women just as as beautiful as Veronica Lake. I am sure there were, and will be, directors as gifted as Rene Clair. And I'm sure there are Irish mischief makers as amusing as Cecil Kellaway. And politicians as stuffy and pompous as Frederic March. however the combination of all these elements in this wonderful fantasy comedy is without equal.
