  • Amazing stuff.

    [Highly rated reviewer]

The only way to describe 'I Saw the Devil' would be to describe it as the Lawrence of Arabia of serial killer movies, an epic of envelope-pushing ultra-violence that manages to trump Oldboy as the new classic of South Korean filmmaking.

I challenge anyone to give up on this one once it gets started, as it grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go for the lengthy running time. Those familiar with 'A Bittersweet Life' or 'A Tale of Two Sisters' will know the style of director (Kim Jee-Woon), and be prepared for explosive and traumatic action scenes, unexpected plot developments, and snippets of black humour - I Saw the Devil takes these elements and boosts the whole concoction to a frenzied extreme. This film was censored for violence in Korea upon release:- those familar with korean film will know that this is no mean feat.

The comparison with Se7en is understandable, but this film has a more heightened sense of tragedy, and more interesting characters within.

Approach with caution, but approach nonetheless.

Absolutely amazing, this a brutal revenge / horror / thriller film that was really thought provoking. Not for the fainthearted but well worth a watch.

I was ready to turn the movie of quite early because it seemed like it was going down the 'torture porn' route. It doesn't the violence is portrayed as repulsive and wrong. I liked how it plays with the 'avenging good guy' theme I started routing for the husband but the hospital scene showed his revenge meant others were going to pay. it's a great movie and I feel Hollywood could learn some lessons from how this handled both it's main characters and main theme.

Despite the contradiction 'psychopath kills for pleasure'...(does anybody writing these movie descriptions understand psychopaths are avoid of all emotion)...this turned out to be a really good movie. I was a bit worried initially when Lee Byung-Hun looked like he was trying to remember if he had left the oven on, after he found out his fiancé had been murdered. However, once the action and blood letting started he was a great hero. Koreans do brutality very well...which is probably why no one ever wants to go to war with them...and it was very realistic. Choi Min-Sik also played a great serial killer and rapist (sociopath or sadist maybe but not a psychopath...get it right people!) He really was someone you loved to hate and wanted to see get his comeuppance and you did not feel any pang of humanity towards him when he did!

this movie is well worth watching,,but i dont know why the cop did not torture the ripper slowly. Gives a good insight to South Korea police force,i hope they keep making good movies, pity they could not send them to North Korea.
