  • Interesting rendering of wing chun although not correct historically.

I anticipated this to be the usual garden variety kung fu film, yet it transpired to be quite a thoughtful and enticing movie with an adequate insight into YIp Man's demeanour. Interestingly, his son YIp Chun was a consultant for the film , but despite his presence, the film still took a number of liberties with Yip Man's life, purely for dramatic effect. For example, he fled Fo-Shan (to Hong Kong) during the Japanese occupation, only to return after the war ended. Also, he was not particularly adept at wing chun (in China) until he turned 16, when his chi sau technique was corrected in Hong Kong, under the tutelage of Leung Jan (whose sifu - Chan Wah Shun was also Yip Mans' sifu back in China, but the old boy croaked after only 3 years of teaching Yip Man, who was 15 at the time). Anyhoo, It is true that Yip Man was never defeated in combat. He passed his legacy to Yip Chun, who like his father, has never been defeated. Sadly, Yip Man passed away on 2nd December 1972 (79 years old), due to throat cancer. This was not mentioned in the film. People regard Bruce Lee as the greatest martial artist ever. However, Yip Man and Yip Chun were superior martial artists (and not street fighters)..

  • One of the better Martial Art Film.

A good quality well made Martial art film. Based on a true story during the Japan & China conflict, just before WW2. Good acting with well rehearsed Kung Fu moves brings the film to a very high standard 'ARTWORK'. Good 'under-acting' by Simon Yam, making the Ip Man very believable. There are sections of terrible scenes, that are quite gory. If you do like Martial art movies this has to be one of the better one's

    18. IP Man (2008) Chinese Director: Wilson Yip Donnie Yen Set in the 1930’s this movie follows loosely the autobiographical story of Yip Man the creator of Wing Chun, the most popular and celebrated form of Kung Fu, made so in particular by Bruce Li in the 1970’s. Master IP is the celebrated Sefu of Foshan, a town in Southern China famous for its Kung Fu schools. Whilst many a Master makes their living from running schools and teaching disciples Master IP does not, instead living a life dedicated to his family, interrupted regularly, however, by challenges to his crown. When the Japanese invade China Master IP loses his status and home becoming a hungry worker struggling to survive the brutal invaders. Eventually after seeking work in the coal mines he, along with other Masters, are chosen to fight for the Japanese General’s entertainment, himself an undefeated martial artist, that is until he goads IP man into a showdown. Master IP defeats the general and is shot in retaliation but so outraged are the crowd witnessing their hero’s unfair treatment that they overpower the soldiers and rescue IP helping him escape to Hong Kong. Here Part 1 of the trilogy finishes with a tantalizing explanation of how Master IP sets up his Wing Chun school finally teaching his art and becoming a Grandmaster and mentor to Bruce Li. That is all to come in Parts 2 & 3 but here in Part 1 is an excellent Martial Arts film, peace and power delivered in style by Donnie Yen and leaving me gagging for Part 2. A must see for lovers of this genre.

I saw the 'early life' prequel to IP man and really looked forward to this. But tho it offers 2 options of Cantonese it doesn't have English sub-titles so its pretty incomprehensible. Yes I KNOW it SAYS it has subtitles .... but it doesn't.

  • EXCELLENT ! AT LAST A FILM WHICH HAS CLASS.

At last a film that I can give 5 stars to. The story was really interesting as well as superb martial art. The film was well filmed with plenty of action and not to far fetched. The Acting was superb and without doubt some of the best I have yet to see in modern day, over seas martial art films. The only thing that I was a little bit disappointed with was that the film was only subtitled in English and was not dubbed in English. But don't let this put you off folks. It was well worth watching and I will without doubt be adding this to my must buy dvd list. Excellent.
