Ice Age
A star-studded cast provides the voices for the prehistoric creatures in this computer-animated feature set 20,000 years ago as the Ice Age approaches. Seemingly antisocial Manny, a woolly mammoth (voiced by Ray Romano), acts as if he just wants to be left alone. When he meets Sid (voiced by John Leguizamo), a sloth, the two become unlikely traveling companions. The plot thickens when the duo finds a human infant and decides to try to return the child to its herd. Manny slowly but surely reveals his heart of gold, while Sid continues to provide comic relief. Diego (voiced by Denis Leary), a saber-toothed tiger with ulterior motives, soon joins them in their search for the humans. Ultimately, this group of misfits becomes its own herd, learning about friendship and loyalty as they brave snow, ice, freezing temperatures, predators, hail, and even boiling lava pits. All the while, a snaggle-toothed squirrel, Scat, provides comic relief as he valiantly struggles with an acorn. A well-written, humorous script and endearing characters mesh well with the state-of-the-art technology and effects. Other stars lending their voices to the feature include Goran Visnjic, Jack Black, and Jane Krakowski.

Pity poor Ice Age. If it hadn't been released so close to the excellent Monsters, Inc, it may have avoided excessive scrutiny. But with the Pixar hit illustrating how good computer animation can be, this similarly created adventure isn't so much cool as downright tepid. Much of this is due to the plot, in which a moody mammoth, a slow-thinking sloth and a sinister sabre-toothed tiger team up during the Pleistocene era to return a lost human infant to his parents. It's wittily scripted with plenty of banter between the lead characters, voiced by John Leguizamo and Denis Leary among others. But there's insufficient action and excitement to carry such a basic tale while having a snow-covered environment to look at doesn't help either. The style of the animation is equally hard to warm to — the boxy, sharp-edges and coldness may be fitting given the sub-zero setting, but children (and adults too) seem to respond best to a certain amount of cuteness that Ice Age sadly lacks. Overall, this is adequate, but instantly forgettable.

What a film !
`Ice Age' emerges as one of the better animated films of recent years, cleverly designed and even more cleverly written. In twenty, thirty years time, Ice Age will be regarded as a classic. Superb cgi, rock solid plot and very funny dialogue with a nice sprinkle of charm. Ice Age is the total animation experience that adults and kids love.
The animators and designers have done a beautiful job in achieving just the right look for this tale. The backgrounds have a colourful, clean, streamlined look to them, and the animals themselves, in their appearance and design, provide a witty commentary on evolutionary history. The perfectly cast voice talents of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo and Dennis Leary (among many others) to create a highly entertaining, family film with a strong message about cooperation, friendship and caring for your fellow herd members.
All the environments and characters were modelled originally by clay, giving the film an artistic edge. There's nothing forced or overdone. The emotion was genuine, especially in the dramatic second half.

I watched this film twice so I didn't miss anything, good family film, easily watchable. Waiting for Ice Age 2.

Fox Animation may be languishing well behind Dreamworks, Aardman, Disney and Pixar as far as brand recognition goes, but the popular Ice Age franchise and last year’s hit Horton Hears a Who! suggests that the studio is doing something right. Subtitled “Dawn of the Dinosaurs” (nonsensically: it’s set after their supposed extinction), Ice Age 3 is strictly surplus to all natural storytelling requirements.
