Your head will explode!By Kruegerbait from England , 19 Jan 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]This film is crazy. It's violent, gory, surreal and extremely entertaining. Let's just say, you won't forget it in a hurry. If you want to see one of the films that influenced Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill, watch this. It's one of the films he mentioned when being interviewed about making Kill Bill.

A big letdown after the film.By H0LLIE (198 reviews) from UK , 23 Jul 2010Having already seen the movie I was extremely drawn to this manga whilst also being very reluctant to watch it. I really wish I hadn't bothered. I can sit and watch torture scenes for a while before I cave in, but combine them with sex and it just gets harder to stomach. This anime version took that link too far for me.
This is set before the film and does it's best to explain Ichi's teen years. And it does go some way to making us understand how he became the monster from the live action movie. But it does it in such a way that I honestly found myself fairly disgusted at times.
The animation style used is highly suitable for the subject matter, with good use of colour. But other than that I don't have any praise for it. It was just too much for me to watch.
More than a bit oddBy Mythil (9 reviews) from Portsmouth , 03 Jun 2010
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideI have watched this twice, first in English then in Japanese, my advice, watch it in Japanese with subtitles.
The stylized animation isn't great and the lip sync isn't good, looks like an old 70's kung fu film. It seems they were trying to do a Clockwork Orange style of acting for the English dub which doesn't work and the script is too much of a close translation to make it a plausible script for the English version.
The story seems to have been lifted from Michael Myers's childhood story and there are bits of Clockwork Orange in there too. Not great but not bad, worth watching if bored but don't go out of your way to see it.
Unanswered questions?By RelentlessRob (57 reviews) from King's Lynn , 05 Aug 2009I am a big fan of (and own the dvd of) the 'Ichi the Killer' film and I thought this animated pre-qual would be like 'The Animatrix' or cosidering how good the film is I was expecting something of 'Manga' quality. Sadly even though it does fill in the gaps left by the film it doesn't really have the same sense of occaision as the something by Manga or the Animatrix series. This is actually a good thing because if it were any better it would detract attention from the original film. If you watch the cartoon before watching the film it's as if the same story is being told to you by two different people, this in turn gives the overall experience depth and you feel more sympathy towards the situation Ichi finds himself in. Both the animated short and the film are dubbed in English by the same performers achieving such coninueity that the whole story becomes more believable. The experience togerther would easilly get four or even five stars but by itself the animated short only gets three from me because as a compliment to the film it's really good but in it's own right and up against the heavy hitters it is a good average. Hope you enjoy it. Rob
Ichi the KipperBy Kaxxx (46 reviews) from Portadown, N.Ireland , 22 Jul 2009Kipper as in kipping folks 'cause thats what I was nearly doing during the 45 mins of this. I love Manga/Anime movies and i'll be the first to admit that I am by no means the foremost authority on the genre, however, this was a let down. I wanted to see it before I checked the live action version (which I still will) but this certainly would be a poor advertisement for wanting to view it. Without ranting too long, my biggest problem here was the actual animation. I mean, isn't Japanese animation known for being the best in the world? This felt like a little side project (which it probably is being a prequel - see? Told ya i'm no authority!) that someone worked on over the weekend. Anyway, i'll watch the live action one now cause I heard it's pretty damn sick!

Too short!By a customer from Bristol, England , 18 Jun 2008The prequel to the film of the same name. Its brilliant manga but its too short. You just get into it then its over. By the way, if you don't like violent manga you won't like this.
