By absent_deity (16 reviews) , 01 Jan 2013a rather beautiful and haunting tale of thwarted masculinity and feminine revenge. it has shades of poe and shakespeare at his most bloody and unrelenting. it also has a uniquely japanese combination of the grotesque and nobly bathetic in its portrayal of what human beings are capable of in a pre-capitalist society, unaffected by a western middle class sensibility. beautifully shot in low grade colour; it is reminiscent of the floating world illustrations that are portrayed in the opening credits. kurosawa without the poetic hyperbole. it draws heavily on the western gothic aesthetic but combined with a particularly japanese sense of the macabre. a forefunner of many later, more famous japanese horror films.- Was this review helpful to you?

japanese drama
