To begin all over again is a classic American dream. But it is remarkably hard to do, as Irish immigrants Johnny and Sarah discover when they hit New York City, with their two spunky young daughters, in the mid-1980s. In pursuit of a dream, the family uses ingenuity and sheer strength of will to make the most of their new life. With no cash to spare, Johnny and Sarah settle into a chaotic New York tenement and attempt to turn the dilapidated setting into a true home. From dragging an iffy-looking air conditioner across Manhattan to finding make-do jobs, nothing comes without a fight for the couple. And yet, as they see America as rife with challenges, dangers and weirdness, their daughters see it as a magical place where anything can happen, a place that might release them from the anguish of what has come before. Then, on Halloween, the girls dare to knock on the door of "the screaming man," a reclusive neighbor named Mateo, and everything changes. As the family heads for a crisis, Mateo becomes their unlikely ally in the territory where hope, faith and even magic hold sway.

This film must be a lively outsider for an oscar. Samantha Morton puts in a superb performance as the wife and mother of an actor who is between work. The two young bolger sisters are excelent and it would come as no surprise to see the younger of the two take best actress in a supporting role.Djimon Hounsou is not a name that I have come across before but again a fine piece of acting by the dying man. Not many films leave me with a tear in my eye but In America certainly did. Not to be missed! Although rated 15, good family film.

If all films were this good.....but there not. Just a brilliant movie with wonderful acting. Watch and enjoy and mabe shed the odd tear

A lovely film...

Brilliant acting by all the cast, but especially the two young girls; a very 'touching' movie seen through the oldest girl's eyes, as she sees her mother and father grieve the loss of their son, her brother, whom she is also grieving. Djimon Hounsou is fab and very nice looking!! :-) have seen him in some other movies, but cannot remember what, so will be looking them up. Don't let the half star rating watcher put you off this movie; it's not for everyone, as it has no action, fast cars or guns etc, but it is a movie about life.

Really Good surprise

Really unexpected to see how good this movie is having had very little advertisement. Cast puts fantastic performance and although in the beginning you might feel uneasy go ahead and get rewarded.

BORING zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Boring as bats*^t - gave up after 20 minutes before I slit my wrists. Only watch this to cheer yourself up if you are watching in a refugee camp.
