Director Lindsay Anderson reunites the cast of London's Royal Court production for this screen version of David Storey's play. Three sons (Alan Bates, James Bolam, Brian Cox) return to their Northern roots for the 40th wedding anniversary celebrations of parents Bill Owen and Constance Chapman. While all three have exceeded the career achievements of their miner father their homecoming brings the usual saga of angst, buried resentments and skeletons in the closet. While its stage origins do hinder the pace of the action, this is wryly observant, and well acted, particularly by Alan Bates.

    An Involving and Moving Masterpiece

Well , I hadn't seen this film since 1980 but remembered it as being very good. 28 Years down the line, I have to say it is brilliant. Obviously now it has a period charm but above all this are the superb performances from a flawless cast who involve you from the start and hold you until the end.The fact that you have looked up this film on the site means you already have an interest in quality films , and this is really a straight filmed play which deserves to be seen. I'll stop now so you can press the button to rent it !!

    Stodgy

Not much to celebrate here as a Northern family gets together for a reunion only to find that the children have outstripped the parents and long-buried secrets must come out. This is essentially a very straight filmization of a successful Royal Court production, preserving it on celluloid for generations to come. And while those future generations may be able to appreciate some quality acting, they won't exactly find it to be a barrel of laughs.
