Beautiful tale of gloom and hope

I have got to say that having seen so many war / holocaust movies before I was not sure there was anything left to say about the matter. Agnieszka Holland proved me wrong! The movie is different and with much more 'feeling' and 'emotion' than most. It is not just an account of what happened but a real tale of hope and sacrifice.- Was this review helpful to you?

Interesting movie
By denis007 (133 reviews) , 27 Mar 2013It is a dark movie in all sense of the term: the story, the setting, the decor, the text,... It is a long dark movie. This movie depicts the gruesome situation that the Jews had to undergo in order to survive this ordeal. It shows very well how these people escaped by living 'literally' underground in the darkness. A lot of sacrifice on their behalf to save their lives. Truly beautiful story! It does represent well the situation of Jews in Poland. Realism has been added thanks to the languages used in the movie (German, Polish, Ukrainian,...). All this adds to the authenticity of the story. The actors are fantastic. The good thing about it is that those actors are unknown here and adds to the emotion and the authenticity. Gripping actions and tense moments spread throughout. Well-worth the time spent. World war 2
