Family life has it's ups and downs...By J Crooks from Manchester , 07 Aug 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]This highly emotional drama follows the life of Dr and Mrs Fowler and their son Frank (Stahl), back from his first year at college.
Frank is in love with Natalie (Tomei) and seems happy playing surrogate father to her two children. Their real father (Mapothor), has other ideas, and a final argument between the three of them ends with tragic consequences.
This is not a hollywood epic blockbuster, nor does it try to be. If you have a short concentration span, and like your films full of gritty action and special effects, this is perhaps not one for you.
If, however, you can handle the emotional ride, and appreciate beautiful filming and direction, with outstanding performances from all of the cast, this will do nicely.

Amazing performancesBy ArrogantDuck (69 reviews) , 08 Aug 2013A powerful and emotional drama about a married couple in a small New England community trying to cope with grief following the murder of their only son. Tom Wilkinson, Sissy Spacek & Marisa Tomei are nothing short of brilliant and the final 20 minutes are intensely gripping. It has it's slow parts, but overall a thoroughly recommended piece of independent cinema.
Self Indulgent DirectionBy Newanda (4 reviews) from London , 09 Jun 2013Good acting, a decent cast but self indulgent direction that drags this movie out two hours. Do we really need to have a closeup zooming in shot of a car's number plate? The plot would be ok but it became so tedious I couldn't even finish it
Slow and drearyBy a customer , 26 Aug 2012Good acting, well made, but slow and dreary story. Even the ending was a let down. It was like watching the air being slowly let out of a balloon.
Bit nothing-yBy erylp (9 reviews) from Ware , 19 Oct 2011I'm not sure whether it was the acting or the script - I suspect the latter seeing as it has a great cast - but I found a lot of the characters a bit one-dimensional, the supporting actors as well as the main players.
Consequently, I couldn't really accept that many of them would act they way they do.
Ignore the titleBy a customer , 08 Oct 2011Beautiful, moving film with great performances from lead actors. Subtle and credible examination of the effects of grief on a marriage and the hidden resentments it reveals. Some say the ending is far-fetched - maybe, but I thought it worked and the whole film kept me gripped throughout. The title is dreadful and completely misleading.
