I truly believe this film has been misunderstood and overlooked. Rich with symbolism and a complex examination of sexuality and sexual roles this is a clever story.

References to Virginia Woolf's flow of consciousness text 'To the lighthouse' abound. At one point one of Meg Ryan's students says - 'boring book, nothing happens, an old woman dies', to which Ryan replies 'How many would have to die to make it interesting?' and the student says 'at least three'. Spot the background shot of a reef emblazoned with 'Mom' and count up the deaths in this film.

Loved the ending and what it had to say about the narrative of male / female rescue.
