Overated film this, hailed by some as an action classic - it isn't. Worth seeing for Donnie Yen in an early role, he has some good fight scenes. Cynthia Khan is simply a very poor martial artist, little speed & she looks like she posseses no power on screen - very unconvincing indeed; worse she is stunt doubled quite a bit.
The production values for a Hong Kong film at the time is very average, and clearly not that high a budget. Plot is poor also. If you're a Donnie Yen fan rent it, anyone else avoid.
Donnie Yen is a master of action cinema, make no mistake about it. A Western audience may have caught him in the likes of Iron Monkey or the incredibly successful Hero. Then of course there was his fleeting appearence in 'Blade 2', an extended cameo in 'Shanghai Knights' and, whisper it, 'Highlander End game'. Hmm.
Still, the guy is pretty much a legend of Hong Kong cinema. A shame then that 'In The Line Of Duty' doesn't do him any real justice.
The film appears very dated now and the story and acting are pretty much industry standard. No Oscars heading East here then. The action however is always impressive, Donnie Yen proving once again why he is a master in his field.
Anyone expecting anything out of the ordinary though will be feeling like a Hong Kong stuntman, badly bruised and beaten.
In the line of duty is just another routine Hong Kong actioner, even the presence of Donnie Yen fails to raise it above the average.
