In The Line Of Fire

Aging secret service agent Frank Horrigan (Clint Eastwood), on duty the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, is still unable to forget his failure on that fateful day, even as he nears retirement in 1993. When Mitch Leary (John Malkovich), a psychotic man calling himself Booth, threatens to kill the current president, Horrigan is the only one who takes the threat seriously. Over time, a cat-and-mouse game develops between the potential assassin and the agent; Horrigan sees the game as a chance to redeem his earlier failure and escape a life that has fallen into alcoholism and self-pity. With his only allies his partner (Dylan McDermott), who realizes he can't handle being a secret service agent and wants to resign, and a female agent (Rene Russo) whom he alternately annoys and attracts, Horrigan takes on Leary one-on-one in a fight to save the president, his job, and his self-respect. Directed with panache and precision by Wolfgang Petersen, IN THE LINE OF FIRE is an expertly crafted thriller that features spectacular performances by Eastwood and Malkovich.

A sight you thought you'd never see: Clint Eastwood in tears. Not many, but they're there. And that's just one of the novelties in this hugely enjoyable thriller in which Eastwood plays a secret service agent who is not only visibly ageing — a fact that he admits to his younger lover, Rene Russo — but is also shamed by his past inability to save President Kennedy from assassination. That's why he's so obsessed with John Malkovich, would-be killer of the current First Executive. Director Wolfgang Petersen and Eastwood clearly have a thing about presidents, with the former trapping Harrison Ford in the hold of Air Force One and the latter seeking to expose murderous Gene Hackman in Absolute Power. This is better than either of those blockbusters, as Petersen piles on the suspense with ruthless skill, while Eastwood reveals the same vulnerability that made his performance in Unforgiven so compelling and convincing. The Oscar-nominated Malkovich makes an admirable adversary, taunting Eastwood in much the same manner that Scorpio did in Dirty Harry. Editor Anne Coates and screenwriter Jeff Maguire also received Oscar nods, although Maguire was not the first to attempt a script, with Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford and Sean Connery linked to previous versions, while Robert Duvall and Jack Nicholson were in the frame for the bad guy. In the end Eastwood and Malkovich proved the perfect men for the job.

An enjoyable thriller that provides Eastwood the opportunity to develop an unstereotypical character, but which also lets Malkovich go over the top as a carpet-chewing baddie, and lacks suspense.

    Another Eastwood Hit

The older he gets , the better he gets. In the Line Of Fire is a taut fast moving thriller from the first frames right to the end. Director Wolfgang Petersen's sure touch and Eastwood's laconic dialogue combines tension, humour and a bit of romance.

Eastwood plays a world weary secret agent, Frank Horrigan, who discovers a plot to kill the president. The assasin (the incomparable John Malcovich) is a loner with a grudge and former CIA hit man. He teases and twists Horrigan and one is never quite sure how it will all end.

Briallantly written and edited and with an excellent supporting cast including Rene Russo and John Mahoney. I can strongly reccomend this film as an excellent night's entertainment.

    Good solid film

Good solid thriller from Clint Eastwood. Not outstanding, but well worth watching. Eastwood great as agent with one more chance to redeem himself.
