  • It's worth the risk.....

This is not going to be everyone's cup of tea, it's slow and very little happens, but the supressed emotion that is built up by the leads, similar to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, is what makes this film one of my favourites. Setting it in the sixties also works well. My advice would be - if you're bored after half an hour turn off, the pace doesn't change. If you're not bored after half an hour you're going to love it. Go on and risk it.... it's only half an hour you'll waste.

  • A Beautifully Crafted Study of Love & Lonliness

A lovely, delicate piece of cinema. There were so many points at which this film could have fallen into cliche, but it sidestepped each one and has carved itself name in arthouse cinema of the best tradition. Subtle and understated we are brought slowly into the pervasive melancholy of the two lead characters.

It feel more Japanese than Chinese/Hong Kong and is all the better for it. The focus is upon the people, the aesthetic of the era and the passing of youth. The film manages to paint a portrait of muted love that lives long in the memory.

    Cinema as art.

If you like films that are fast, well signposted and have a traditional beginning, middle and end, this will probably not be any good for you. If, however, you like to immerse yourself in a beautiful piece of work. Watch it.

  • Gorgeous and evocative

This is a hypnotic film which draws you in from the first frames, and never lets go of you, leaving you wanting more. This despite its leisurely pace and some baffling moments. The director shows he is an auteur: he knows we can't get enough of his star Maggie Cheung in her gorgeous and ever-changing, high-necked, figure-hugging dresses, and so he dares to show her again and again decending the scruffy steps to the noodle bar, following her as she ascends again with her lonely meal....the pleasures of this film are in the tension that builds between the two lonely protagonists, and the sense of period so lovingly and yet casually evoked. It reminded me of Terence Davies' films in the contrast between claustrophobic tenement living, and the dreams of glamour and beauty evoked by the lush detail. And I loved the music.

I cannot say much more than other reviewers have already written here, other than to say give this film a go. The films takes its time to establish the private lives of 2 couple whose circumstances bring them to share 2 bedsits in a flat.

Tony Leung & Maggie Cheung (whom you adored from 'Hero') are spectacular in their performances: subtle gestures, puzzling silences, inner conflicts. Off in the wings is the mayhem going on in mainland China, people are fleeing from the chaos of Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution. People are squeezed into small spaces... with far-reaching consequences.

The syling is 1960s (way before Mad Men) chic. take your time with this film and it will cast a spell on you.
