First things first. This film will make no sense at all, unless you have seen Infernal Affairs 1. This third episode is both a sequel and a re-visiting of the first film with a brand new character (played by Leon Lai). New perspectives, incredibly twisted plot lines and a superb performance from Andy Lau make this a fitting conclusion to a masterful trilogy.

Infernal Affairs 3 follows on Infernal Affairs more directly but there are some missing pieces so if you want to get the complete picture you really have to watch the previous two movies. Having said that it is such a patchwork that each part stands up on its own while making up trilogy. Cops and gangsters with few prostitutes thrown in. In political terms the 3 movies provide backdrop picture of how Hong Kong underwent its change from being British colony to becoming gem of communist China.

  • Disappointing but watchable

Unfortunately you will only understand this film if you have seen the first two. This is primarily because it consists of a series of flashbacks to the first two films, or events that happened around the time those films are set. As such it becomes rather overcomplicating. The main flaw of this trilogy is that there is no new plot-drive after the first film. The second two are just either flesh to or fallout from the original story. If you saw the first two films, watch it to wrap up the trilogy, but if you didn't don't watch it. To be honest, I would say just watch the first one.

  • Make sure you watch 1 and 2 first

I watched all 3 films over 3 days in the right order hence the storyline and the characters were fresh in my mind. However, even allowing for that I found this one a little confusing at times with the story jumping backwards and forwards and characters ageing and becoming younger to suit the timeframe. Still good and, if viewed from the perspective of all 3 together, probably fair to say very good.

this tale just seemed to stretch like a very long long piece of string. At times it became tiresome.

You do wonder where they can take it next we have had a before the original after the original in this one. Movie goers must think that if they ever made a forth where would it go who knows I for one am not overly keen to find out

I found the third instalment underwhelming. The flashbacks are confusing to say the least, and without doubt this is the weakest instalment of an otherwise excellent trilogy.
