    [Highly rated reviewer]

With the combination of Hong Kong cinema and Japanese manga, I really expected (cliche alert!!!) some 'high octane' thrills.

I was a little disappointed to find that this isn't a patch on 'The Fast and the Furious' series. 'TFATF' works on a car porn level that Initial D doesn't. There is no fetishising of the cars and no real focus on the next level skills of the drivers.

Without focus on the cars or the driving skills - the film falls flat in showing the dumb lives and relationships of the kids involved. This coupled with a bizarre boy meets girl, 'oh my god, my girlfriend is a school-girl prostitute' sub plot which seems grafted on for no real purpose - kind of leaves me wishing for 'TFATF4'.

I can't believe I've just wished for 'TFATF4' in print.

The music in it is all wrong, when I saw this back in 2006, it had like a japanese-techno feel to the music, the film is the same, intense, heart-warming, and well- I was going to say heroic, but the fact that the original music wasn't in it, this film loses one star.

Not a bad film, but the drifting / racing action is a bit tame compared with Fast & Furious etc. I felt a lot of the racing was a bit like in Herbie - get the everyone to move or drive slowly and speed the footage up.

I did quite like the soundtrack though

  • The origin of Drifting.

    Rated - 5.0 stars
    By a customer , 16 Dec 2011
This is a film about the origin of Drifting. Now an international motorsport.

It’s not for the dumb people who can’t read or the brainless fast and furious type.

The original animated version was a hit in Asia and the Japanese gave the rights to a Hong Hong director instead because the Americans could not understand the culture of the characters.

So the Americans went off sulking to product the Tokyo Drift Fast and Furious, which was so unreal and for the shallow mind.

People who knows about Drifting will appreciate the cars and the history of the Drifting sport so popular around the world today.

People who know about Japanese culture will understand humble nature of this film.

People who know about cars will know the value of an AE86 today. FCs S13s GTRs

The film was done on a small budget with professional drifting driver doing the stunts so they didn’t destroy the cars.

Its a great film for the right people.

  • toyota Corolla porn?

Not having seen the animation, or read the manga, and having to taking it on face value I loved it, another reviewer mentions TFATF and the 'car porn?' FFS TFATF had a jetta in it as a cool car! Heavy, ugly and German springs to mind. The absence of this is exactly what is good about this film, I'm pretty sure the hero is driving a toyota corolla (uk name) but because of the set up and the skill (no nitros here) he wins.

He also falls in and out of love, and finds what makes his father tick...and his Dad gains a grudging respect for his son.

Also, it's probably the best translated film I've ever seen.

The subtiles made me laugh, and that's a first (hit him first? I'd sooner have a w*nk)

I echo another reviewer in saying if you can't watch and read, please keep your low IQ and opinions to yourself.

I loved it, toyota corolla car porn... wicked!
