not a great first date movie!

This was the Glasgow Film Festivals 'Surprise Movie' and I've got to hand the organisers credit for shutting a couple of hundred people in a room with David Lynch totally unprepared.

I'd actually had a hunch that Inland Empire is what was to be screened and, when the title came up, I had a good two minutes of self indulgent, loud whispering to my girlfriend 'I was right, I was right, told you!'. (it wasn't our first date incidentally)

Then reality crept and and we realised what we were about to witness. A three hour David Lynch film, shot on very cheap digital which could be about one of several things or nothing at all.

I'm not going to go into plot here, partly because it would be impossible to pinpoint but mainly because Lynch films to me have always provoked more of an emotional response on some deeper level than a need to understand exactly whats going on. Maybe thats me just saying I'm clueless but I don't care.

This film is hard work. Many Lynch films are but this one is like a bludgeon, hammering you into submission. The cheap digital cameras, where you can see the slow auto focus working, and the harsh sound give the film a sense of reality that can be very immediate and really disturbing. David Lynch's nightmares are always beautifully shot and if you take that element away some scenes can be difficult to watch.

Many of his trademark characters and bursts of surrealism are scattered along the way, which helps. The familiarity easing the harshness for a while. Oh and there's rabbits. Don't ask me about the rabbits.

So should you go see this film? If you're a Lynch fan then yes, undoubtedly. It took him three years to make with his own money so it not been bound by any studio pressure. It's his warped mind undiluted.

If you've not seen Lynch before then no way! You'll probably find it infuriating and worse it might put you off his other work. See Mullholland Drive, Blue Velvet, Lost Highway, Eraserhead and the Straight Story (in that order) first.

So if you're off to the cinema this weekend to catch it, good luck. Just give it a second thought if you're trying to impress a hot date.

    I made it through!

I did not see this at the cinema as I fully expected it to be a serious test of my attention span.Plus I thought that Mulholland Drive was way too much for watching in an enjoyable manner. However one of my favourite films is Eraserhead.I used to pride myself on the fact that here was a film that no one 'normal' could handle on any level and used to put it on whenever I wanted people out of my room/life etc.Plus it took about 10 viewings to get a handle on any kind of meaning and thus was value for money.

Never liked Lost HIghway although I tried to for years.Loved Twin Peaks series one and hated series 2.Seemed I was one of the few people who liked Fire walk with me.

SO I rent this film and allowed myself all afternoon. And I did stop it a few times to make a drink or something, but I got through in less than 3 and a half hours. And I want to watch it again...although not for a while.

I'd say that it actually made me appreciate digital film.In fact made me consider how easy it is now to make your own film with minimal funding.Although it is the soundtrack that helps here,as with every Lynch work,if it had a different score I may well have hated it.

I find it hilarious that people rent this dvd with no knowledge of the contents or who directed it or what the term 'lynchian' means. One thing is for certain, those people are the ones who give the zero or one star reviews.I think this film makes far more sense than Lost Highway...but its so far from an easy ride for anyone, even a dedicated fan.

    Easter Bunnies

    • 18 Mar 2008

What's up, doc? In honour of the holidays we're pulling on our bunny ears, nibbling on a carrot and taking the measure of our favourite movie rabbits (with a hare or two thrown in). First, a little history: Easter bunnies have been with us longer than you might think. The word "Easter" derives from "Eastre", a Saxon pagan goddess. Eastre, or Eostre, was the goddess of spring and fertility, and she was celebrated at the vernal equinox, and again on the first Sunday after the next full moon -... Read more
