  • not a great first date movie!

    [Highly rated reviewer]

This was the Glasgow Film Festivals 'Surprise Movie' and I've got to hand the organisers credit for shutting a couple of hundred people in a room with David Lynch totally unprepared.

I'd actually had a hunch that Inland Empire is what was to be screened and, when the title came up, I had a good two minutes of self indulgent, loud whispering to my girlfriend 'I was right, I was right, told you!'. (it wasn't our first date incidentally)

Then reality crept and and we realised what we were about to witness. A three hour David Lynch film, shot on very cheap digital which could be about one of several things or nothing at all.

I'm not going to go into plot here, partly because it would be impossible to pinpoint but mainly because Lynch films to me have always provoked more of an emotional response on some deeper level than a need to understand exactly whats going on. Maybe thats me just saying I'm clueless but I don't care.

This film is hard work. Many Lynch films are but this one is like a bludgeon, hammering you into submission. The cheap digital cameras, where you can see the slow auto focus working, and the harsh sound give the film a sense of reality that can be very immediate and really disturbing. David Lynch's nightmares are always beautifully shot and if you take that element away some scenes can be difficult to watch.

Many of his trademark characters and bursts of surrealism are scattered along the way, which helps. The familiarity easing the harshness for a while. Oh and there's rabbits. Don't ask me about the rabbits.

So should you go see this film? If you're a Lynch fan then yes, undoubtedly. It took him three years to make with his own money so it not been bound by any studio pressure. It's his warped mind undiluted.

If you've not seen Lynch before then no way! You'll probably find it infuriating and worse it might put you off his other work. See Mullholland Drive, Blue Velvet, Lost Highway, Eraserhead and the Straight Story (in that order) first.

So if you're off to the cinema this weekend to catch it, good luck. Just give it a second thought if you're trying to impress a hot date.

  • A True Mind Blowing Experience, A Masterpiece

i loved this film, it shows the world for what it really is, in light of the underworld i found it to be Spiritually gripping, very deep and there was a slice of everything from mind control to power and corruption, the gypsy tale was portrayed beautifully, a true masterpiece, its just a shame so few people will come to appreciate the beauty and art the director has captured.

  • Does even Lynch know what this one's about...?

At 2hrs52mins this is bound to feel confusing, even for die-hard Lynch fans. If you can cope with the frankly amateurish camera work (it seems the whole thing was shot on camcorders, usually right in the actors faces) and you have a very comfy chair to view from, I think it's worth the nearly 3 hours of oddness and disturbing journeys through some dark and upsetting places. I'd recommend good speakers or watching with headphones as Lynch's sound design is a big part of the feel of the film. There are a lot of parallels with Lynch's other work - in particular his later Mulholland Drive - with film-within-a-film-within-who-know's-what, but as with all of his work I find part of the enjoyment is not knowing what is going on. There are sections where the constantly confused face of Laura Dern starts to grate, but the experience of the whole is probably better than the individual scenes.

  • Too Lynchian for Lynch?

    Rated - 3.5 stars

Two problems with watching a David Lynch film: the expectations are almost unattainably high, and there is always the risk that Lynch will push his own brand of surrealism so far that it will become parody.

At times this film does live up to expectations - the performances are great, there is the familiar Lynchian menace under the surface throughout and the metaphors are satisfyingly surreal and simultaneously subtle. The exploiting of the relationship between actress and character to fracture the script is also a triumph, but we've seen it before. The first problem is, then, overcome.

The rabbits speaking unconnected lines, usually questions, to manufacture disorientation? Too Lynchian? Maybe, but to the extent of parody? There are moments in this film at which it would seem that Lynch was on autopilot, and these moments do let the film down. Removed, they would make for a more original (in Lynch terms) film that would be no less challenging or satisfying.

If you've seen this film then you should know what these moments are.

Dark brooding confusing like a cross between Saragossa Manuscript and Chien Andalou, very satisfying and yet unresolved. Worth watching a few times.

If you've ever seen Mullholland drive and thought 'That was good, but I wish it was a bit less coeherent' then this is the film for you. Really you have to give in to the fact that your not going to understand anything and just appriciate the cinematography.

A bit too long to be worth the effort, but 10/10 for being different.
