This movie is about a bank robbery and what happens within the bank and with the cops outside. Don't go into this movie expecting miracles, its not fantastic. The acting is good, but to be honest it doesn't make much sense really. I wouldn't buy this movie, or watch again, but that is only my opinion.
My initial scepticism about seeing a Spike Lee film (given his last few efforts have been below par) soon disappeared, in fact, 10 mins into the film i was hooked. I am one of those annoying people who likes to try and guess plots and twists, but it had me guessing pretty much till the end. This is a film about a bank robbery, a conspiracy and a dark secret, and it even has a few laughs in it as well. Denzel is starting to look old, so the hot young girlfriend is a bit of a stretch(!), but he plays a good part. See this film, and tell me if you guessed what was going on...
Together with Fallen one of the two most ORIGINAL films in which the incredible Mr Washington has starred.
Well I watched this movie and on the whole enjoyed it. I am not too sure about the ending, I felt it was a bit rushed, could have done with another 10 mins to make the whole movie feel a bit more complete.
The basis of the movie is a bank robbery, where hostages are taken. The story should have been great, it had plenty of good ideas and was not short on twists, but I felt the script was very weak in places.
To be honest I think it was acting that saved the day. With the likes of Denzel Washington and Clive Owen who just about managed to pull off a good performance with a very weak script. If you had put a couple of lesser actors in this I'm sure it would have been a total flop.
I don't think the character 'Madaline' (Jodie Foster) was needed at all in this movie. Her role in the film was the most unbelivable. The way she was let in and out of the bank during the seige was laughable. When she went up to the door of the bank and knocked it. it was like she was going round her friends for coffee morning, It just made me laugh and I am not sure I was supossed too.
To sum up
Pros:
Good story line
Good acting/actors
Loads of twists
Funny at times
Keeps you watching
Keeps you guessing (for most of the time)
Cons:
Script was weak (some of the lines really made me cringe)
Although it was a good story line it kind of loses it's way.
The ending is strange, felt a bit rushed.
Not sure if it was supposed to be funny, but the script made me laugh on many occassions.
Madaline was totally unbelivable
I liked this movie up until one particular short scene and after that it was ruined for me. If you've seen the film you'll know what scene I'm talking about. I had to rewind the scene 2 or 3 times to check that the DVD wasn't faulty. And nope it wasn't, it was just the scene. And it all went down hill after that. I was so dismayed that I literally threw the movie in the bin afterwards (well, the recycling actually and it was a copy from a friend, not a rental, so don't worry). That's a first for me, but I just couldn't bear it. Why?! Why would a cool movie that kept me in suspense for the first half want to go and have a funny turn? It's just not right I tell you.
I will admit that I liked it for the most part. I like the actor who plays the bad guy and the cop actor is good as well. I'm not a big fan of Jodie Foster (whose name I can remember) after watching 'Flightplan' (although I loved 'Contact'). I think it was the director - I hear he likes to do this signature scene that I have been rambling on about that I am not so keen on. And the ending. It didn't do it for me. I like endings that tie things together, so what. I can cope with loose endings but this movie was just so undone at the end. Appalingly scrambling to finish what I had been looking forward to the whole way through. Yes, I understood the story, but the ending could have told a whole lot more.
Anyway, don't let me put you of watching it (maybe THAT scene won't send shivers up your spine) if you like cop thrillers. After everything, I appreciate that mine is just an opinion that balances with the praise-worthy reviews out there. Maybe next time I'll write something more positive. I don't think I should write a review of Scorsese's The Departed then... (INFERNAL damnation to his silly and pointless remaking AFFAIRS).

3 great performances by Owen, Foster and Washington, if you take them seperately.
Something just doesn't sit right though the flow of the film is just that little bit off. Its worth watching however you might be a little disappointed.
Saw this film on a whim really and am extremely pleased that I did. I was entertained throughout and spent most the film trying to guess the next move. Washington and Owen are excellent in the quirky kind of roles we've seen them in before; Foster plays a ever-so-slightly unusual character for her and whilst she's good, she didnt convince me of the pit-bull persona to 100%. Spike Lee throws in just enough of an element of social history & conscience to add an extra dimension to the plot and elevate this above being a just a good heist film.
Thoroughly recommend adding this one to your selection, I just cant get rid of a nagging thought in the back of my head that Ive seen the twist at the end somewhere before... hmmm.
Not your ordinary robbery flick. Keeps you entertained and guessing throughout. Well acted, with a surprising ending.
This was a great film, it kept you guessing how the plot line was going to develop. With an interesting twist towards the end.
Yes this is a proper film with a proper cast and a proper entertainment plot, Not the usual Spike Lee hectoring fare but something that is actually entertaining. The story of a perfect bank robbery, with shades of and homage to Sidney Lumet's thrillers. All the cast are good, the story and characters good, music good, all in all a good film. Not an outstanding work of art, but a fine effort none the less.
Great film! Clever storyline, with some nice acting and convincing characters. Kept me enrapped in the plot throughout the film, with good moments of tension, action and dialect. Along similar lines as other films like Usual Suspects. Clive Owen even proves he can act! Denzel Washington as always proves an excellent good cop, only Jodie Foster I wasn't completely sold by.
Good cast. Great thriller/action movie with a twist. If you like Oceans 11 then you willl love this one. Enjoy.
