This came as a double-sided DVD, which was slightly perplexing as there was no indication as to which side was which. Having sorted that out, I settled in to watch this episode, the very first in the series. The inevitable scene-setting process was not too drawn out and the drama started to unfold quite quickly. I won't give too much of the plot away, but suffice it to say that it was a fairly standard formula of a young lady found dead in a house in Jericho (a district in the north-west part of Oxford), with various suspects, clues, false leads etc. Watch out also for Patrick Troughton, a former Dr Who, who appears as a seedy down-and-out Peeping Tom.
The other side of the DVD includes an extra feature with interviews by John Thaw and also a film of a Morse-themed walking tour of Oxford, in which we learned among other things that the street known as Canal Reach in this episode is really Combe Street, and that Colin Dexter, the author, makes a Hitchcock-like cameo appearance in each of the films.
Inspector Morse fans will definitely want to see this episode, the original one in the series, and the extra material is well worth seeing.
the first outing for John Thaw as Morse and although now nearly 20 years on this is still a great way to spend 2 hours. Great story, superb performances. Ifyou have never seen this rent it now.
