Inspector Morse - The Wench Is Dead

Morse is taken seriously ill at a museum reception and is hospitalized. While there, he takes an interest in a 140 year-old case known as the Oxford Canal Murders. The case involved the murder and rape of young woman traveling by canal boat from Coventry to London. The case resulted in two men being hanged and Morse believes there was a miscarriage of justice. With Lewis away at the Inspectors course Supt. Strange, who has counseled Morse to take early retirement, assigns fast-track university graduate PC Adrian Kershaw to do some leg work for him. Morse determines that a fraud took place and that the victim may have been someone else altogether.

    A long long time ago

This is the Morse that shouldn't work. No Lewis (even though Kevin Whateley gets a credit on the cover), and Morse tucked up in a hospital bed does not bode well and is certainly not the usual Morse fare. But it is a Dexter original story and the writing shines through. Real detective work at its purist and in some ways Morse at his best. A real treat given my low expectations and now one of my Morse favourites.

    A tale without an end..

Morse gets involved in a historical case which causes him to doubt that the correct verdict was delivered. If you like Morse then you will love this one - well worth the rating.
