What caused anthropologist Ethan Powell (Anthony Hopkins) to go on a murderous rampage while studying gorillas in Rwanda? That's what idealistic psychiatrist Theo Caulder (Cuba Gooding Jr) tries to find out when Hopkins is finally arrested and placed in a mental institution in Phenomenon director Jon Turteltaub's plodding treatise on animal-versus-human instincts. Loosely based on Daniel Quinn's novel Ishmael, the film naturally features a fine performance from Hopkins as the intellectually frozen man resorting to the law of the jungle for justice. Yet Turteltaub's odd mixture of Gorillas in the Mist and One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest is hardly riveting because it's mainly constructed as a series of prison interviews, with Gooding Jr ranting while Hopkins sits in self-imposed silence. Basic Instinct, indeed!

This movie is like marmite - you'll either love it or hate it! For me it was an amazing experience, I have often enjoyed Hollywood's attempts at incorporating animals directly into the plot of movies, but as we all know they rarely succeed. Instinct is one of those movies that when you watch it you hush everyone around you as you dont want to miss a word, when its finished it really gets you think about your perception on things. simply put, the movie is about one man's struggle to be accepted and then his respect for being allowed to enter the gorilla group. This respect and appreciation drives him to protect the group as we would protect our own families. A very interesting plot and an overall feel good factor at the end
Anthony Hopkins delivers the goods once again. Totally plausible as the anthropologist who went missing for two years in the forest with the gorillas and then emerged to kill humans. Well worth seeing - compulsive viewing. Cuba Gooding is excellent as the young psychiatrist who goes to see Hopkins to make a name for himself and write a book, and ends up caring more than he meant to.
