  • An agonising issue, demanding serious attention

    [Highly rated reviewer]

The subject of Murder, and the death penalty for committing it, is so fraught and complex that intimate interviews like these should only be viewed in certain very strict conditions. I chose to see the film on the strength of Werner Herzog's reputation: it was not a disappointment, but I still felt uncomfortable being unable to share the experience with a mixed jury to discuss the issues.

Personally, I found the dialogue (not being spoken by actors, and in a mostly Texan, spontaneous style) difficult to follow--but subtitles could not have conveyed the tone of the speakers.

  • Bleak unemotional study of casual murder

and the protagonists casual acceptance of his fate. Despairing docu that leaves you yearning for them good ole days when folks left doors unlocked & local bobbies rode pushbikes. The landscape cinematography & twangy guitar soundtrack conveys atmosphere and underlines the unspoken sentiment that in modern day Texas anythings possible. And not in a good way.

This documentary gives you a insight into a different world. I personally have always been against capital punishment, even after watching the heartache and devastation such crimes can cause i still stand by my belief. The pain it causes to the families left behind is unjustified, they are innocent, whilst the guilty party sleeps eternally. LIFE long incarceration is more fitting. This doc will take you through an array of emotions, all angles are covered, not just one side of the story.

  • Humanism and the rest

Not as captivating as Herzog's other stuff (Grizzly Bear) nevertheless the strong humanistic message is there as always. There you have it. A damage that a killing, ANY killing important to note, does to the family, community etc. I saw a range of people deeply affected by the crime and then the punishment. Felt that Herzog was not as inquisitive and confident talking to the individuals there. Interesting insight into the backyard America too.

  • Thought Provoking

When I started to watch this Iwas fully against the death penality but this film showed the rawness of the families pain, the non remorse against evidence that is unexplainable. The film maker did try and push his view of being against the death penality a bit too much I wish he had been more centred. And told everyones story to leave you thinking. The crime is fully explained and even backround behaviour shown. And All I am going to say is the fruit loop is scary in a freak sort of way, The pain shown was raw and heart breaking, A very thought provoking film,a must for someone who wants to see both points of the journey to the 'd' day. My thoughts and respect go to all families that have felt the pain,
