This is by far Joel and Ethan Coen's most expensive film and also their first working from an existing script. That it turns out to be their weakest effort so far may not be unconnected. A slick, colourful screwball comedy (like their own Hudsucker Proxy without the period setting), it follows the quest of ultra-successful divorce lawyer Miles Massey (George Clooney) to marry professional gold-digger Marylin Rexroth (Catherine Zeta-Jones) using his own cast-iron “pre-nup”. This being a Coen brothers film, it's populated with wonderful, often grotesque supporting characters including Edward Herrmann's philandering millionaire, Billy Bob Thornton's dozy oilman and Jonathan Hadary's eccentric trial witness. But when these turns distract from rather than add to the central plot, you're in dangerous territory. There are moments of inspired, slapstick brilliance (not least those featuring an asthmatic hitman), and Clooney works his socks off, but it lacks a hard centre and plot keeps racing ahead of character. It's neither as unhinged as their Raising Arizona nor as warm as Fargo; let's hope this is an isolated blip on the Coens' graph.

It's a comment on modern manners that a romantic comedy should involve a gold-digging woman and a cynical divorce lawyer, but there's stylish amusement to be found.

    Excellent in every aspect!!

When you have two of the most swarve actors playing off each other then you are bound to be onto a winner.

George Clooney and Catherine Zeta Jones are the alternate in finesse in this battle of love vs money. From the very first moment that Miles, George's character, and Marilyn, Catherine's character, meet you know that each character has completely different agendas. As Miles tries to woo Marilyn the audience is taken for a ride of hope and dispare, of will they, won't they get together. Just when you think that things have finally worked themselves out another spanner is thrown into the works.

I expect to be adding this to my DVD collection, excellent in every aspect!!

    Excellent Old School Humour

I'm not sure what the other reviewers here didn't like about this film, as most of them didn't ellaborate. But this is a good film and definitely worth a watch. The film takes a step back from the pace of modern hollywood and revisits a time were men wore impecable suits and women wore slinky cocktail dresses oozing sex appeal. Clooney pulls off a superb performance as the fast talking, hard-nosed lawyer lead - often resembling but not plagiarising Cary Grant. Zeta Jones, although a tad wooden, plays the lead femme fatale perfectly. This is a great 'sunday afternoon' style romcom, definitely worth a watch, especially if you're in the mood for an old black and white movie but appear to have seen them all!

The Coen Brothers enter the mainstream

Intolerable Cruelty is the story of Miles Massey, a successful, bored divorce lawyer looking for challenges, and perfect teeth. Onto his horizon comes Catherine Zeta-Jones, playing gold-digger Marilyn Rex-Roth, a woman after his own heart and cash. Divorce suits follow, and cupid tries to dodge the pre-nuptial agreements that seem to accompany every proposal.

This is a marvellous film, following in the footsteps of the great screwball comedies of the forties made popular by Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. Clooney and Zeta-Jones are fantastic as the cynical pair slowly learning to love. They really do have chemistry together, and both seem to be having a great time. We all know now that Clooney isn’t a man afraid to ridicule himself, but who would have thought that Catherine Zeta-Jones could mock her own star image so gracefully.

The supporting cast is, as you would expect from a Coen brothers film, wonderful, with supporting roles for Geoffrey Rush and Billy Bob Thornton among others. Especially funny is the wheezing hitman played by Irwin Keyes. The production values are high, making this a glossy, attractive picture with a fast pace and multitude of terrific visual gags.

Coen brothers acolytes may complain that Intolerable Cruelty is too mainstream, but when a tired format can be brought to life with such joy and fun, who really cares? This is a must see, so what are you waiting for? Go see it.

I can't confess to being Catherine Zeta Jones' or George Clooneys biggest fans but this was a quite enjoyable movie. Clooney turns in an amusing comedy role and Jones looks every inch the glamorous female co-star. Billy Bob Thorton also puts in a light-hearted role. If you want Mills and Boon look elsewhere, if you something to lighten the mood and not make you reach for the sick bucket then you could do a lot worse than this.

While George Clooney was excellent this had none of the pace or humour of the screwball comedies such as Bringing Up Baby that it attempts to emulate. Less emphasis on the look and more on the central relationship would have made a huge difference. Catherine Zeta Jones had nothing to do except looked gorgeous which made the central love affair rather hard to accept. Not as funny or as sexy as it should have been.

    Fantastic film

I don't much like CZJ, but this is suprisingly good. George Clooney is fantastic (the acting as well as to look at!), this film has twists and surprises throughout. A great plot line, superb humour and classy characters make this a definate 'must see' - you won't regret it.

    It'll nail yo ass

This another example of the cinema magic by the Coen brothers taking a standard film genre turning it on it's head and completely twisting it with their usual flair, eye for great images and endlessly quotable dialogue.

I noticed in one of the early reviews someone rated it 1 star because it wasn't the corny romance they wanted, well it is romantic, cliched, but in the best possible way. This is short, sharp and very often laugh out loud hilarious, when i saw this in the theatre people where in tears laughing, and i was on the verge.

This isn't a romantic comedy, it's a screwball mayhem Clooney is excellent, Zeta-Jones does what she does best (looks pretty), Cedric the Entertainer although implausible named is fantastic, and minor characters like The Baron von Epsy and Wheezy Joe nearly steal the show away from them.

not the best Coen bros - but still good

This was the Coen brothers first attempt at a 'mainstream' movie with expensive Hollywood actors (Zeta-Jones in particular, Clooney has worked with Joel and Ethan before). So if you're expecting something like ER or (trying to think of a memorable CZJ movie here) you're likely to be disappointed.

Like all Coen brothers films, it has quirky characters, black humour, intelligent dialogue and a decent storyline.

This is black romantic comedy, with decent on-screen chemistry between Clooney and Zeta-Jones. It takes some wonderful jibes at gold-digging wives and greedy marital lawyers - and has some nice twists and turns in the plot to keep you guessing and amused.

It's clearly not as black as Fargo, or funny as the Big Lebowski, or as thought-provoking as Barton Fink - but it's a very competent romantic comedy which has a satisfying edge to the humour - if you prefer Ally McBeal to Friends you'll like this.

1 Star because there is no zero!!

I was thouroughly disappointed with this film.

It was over the top cheesey and I found, for the first time ever, I wanted to put my foot through the screen and kick George Clooney for the worst over-acting ever!!

If this was an attempt to emulate the great rom/com classics of Rock Hudson and Doris Day, it fails miserably on all counts.

Unless you want to spend an hour and a half not really caring what the hell happens to the chief protagonists, other than hopefully them falling down a great big hole never to be seen again, avoid this one like the plague!!

    Saved by the cast

What could have been a very mediocre rom-com is lifted into the well worth watching bracket by cracking turns from the two leads, Clooney and Zeta-Jones. They are both excellent with some sizzling on screen chemistry.

The story has it's good twists and laughs, and there is some good support from the likes of Billy Bob Thornton and Geoffrey Rush. Well worth a look.

Not as good as it should have been

Miles Massey (Clooney) is an almost legendary divorce attorney, the Massey pre-nuptial agreement is the subject of a term's study at Harvard. He's so good he can deliver victory from impossible cases almost in his sleep, the problem is that this is more or less what he's doing because Miles Massey is bored and unfulfilled.

Enter Rex Rexroth, a philandering husband caught out by his wife Marylin (Jones) who retains Massey to guard his fortune from his wife. Thus opposed to Marylin in court Massey finds her fascinating, pursues her and finds a quarry every bit as cunning as himself.

Intolerable Cruelty has a great concept and, on the whole, really quite good performances but it never seems to gel. I can't put my finger on it but the intelligence of some of the dialog, the subversive undertones of the plot and the clever performances all seem to promise so much more than they ever deliver.

come on guys its not that bad

ok, this is not the best coen brothers film, but it is still far better than the usual garbage chucked out annually by hollywood. Yes the laughs are subtle, those expecting knob gags in an American Pie style will be disapointed, but it is still an above average film. if you have only watched half the film how can you submit a review? This is a good film, slightly commercial for the coen's but well worth watching.
