Clint Eastwood directs and Morgan Freeman plays Nelson Mandela. So can they pull it off?

  • Clint, Morgan and Damon. Don't mention Mandela

It's neither brilliant nor dreadful; and to be fair, it is above average. But this film somehow leaves you slightly unfulfilled. Yes the story is on the face of it inspiring; the use by newly elected President Mandela of South Africa's hosting of the Rugby World Cup 1995 to start the unification of a country torn apart by apartheid. Couldn't Clint have found two proper South Africans to play the lead roles? Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman are just too well known for these roles. I also felt that the filming of the actual matches being played was technically well-below what we can rightfully expect to see on screen. I mean, these matches actually happened and I found the film so unconvincing in this area that I have googled them to make sure that it was true! If you look at the whole thing from an american perspective, then I suppose it's pretty much what you might expect from a production team who appear not to understand rugby. Finally, the metaphor using the Presidential Guard to illustrate the unification of blacks and whites under one flag was painful to watch. The whole thing might have been more effective by just changing the point of view away from Nelson Mandela to one of the other protagonists; but without Mandela, you've got nothing international to take to market ..... This is definitely not one of Clint's best efforts.

  • Very uplifting and enjoyable, even if you don't understand rugby.

A very moving and uplifting film. Freeman and Damon are excellent and well supported by a very good ensemble, and the whole story is a beautiful and emotionally gripping one. I'm not into rugby, so on that level the film was somewhat impenetrable; but I still enjoyed it immensely.

Clint does it again, this time with a story we think we all know, but brings some new light to shine. Morgan Freeman brings what only he can to the role of Nelson Mandela, whilst Matt Damon at first would seem to be somewhat of a miss casting as the Springbok captain. But he just about pulls it off, considering he appears to be half the size of the original guy. Although one would have to admit that the sporting scenes are perhaps the weakest part of the film. All told, not a bad film. After all, if it's got the name of Eastwood on it, then it's not going to really bad.

  • Awful rubbish

This really is BAD. One-dimensional characters, terrible script, boring and a waste of celluloid. Real shame as Morgan Freeman can do so much better. Anyone giving this 5 stars must have been watching a different film. I couldn't care less about any of the characters and the whole story seemed to be delivered by all the cast in some sort of collective trance. Don't waste you time with this rubbish. Turned it off after 45 mins (I really tried to like it).

This was one of the most uplifting and inspirational Films I have ever had the pleasure to watch. It presents an opportunity for greater appreciation of a difficult time in the recent history of a newly formed South Africa.
