Iphigenie En Tauride is a rarity you don?t often see in the theatre, so DVD is a good option. Gluck sits interestingly between Handle and Mozart. Although he does not have the highly developed technique of these composers, this is still effective and successful as musical drama containing some memorable ideas. It?s well sung and stylishly performed, although I found the abstract symbolic staging a little heavy. Good sound on DTS Surround creating a sense of the theatre acoustic. The DVD also contains a documentary on Gluck which is most informative.
I strongly advise anybody who doesn't know this opera to view the post performance explation first. The plot then becomes much clearer.Great singing and chorus.
