but a pleasant and likeable film nonetheless. There are few surprises as most of the plot is completely predictable, although a pleasant surprise for me is that Michael Caine can act after all! He is very credible as the curmudgeonly Clarence losing his marbles and in fact all the performances are great, more than making up for the weak script.

This is a very moving film about a young boy whose worn out family run an old peoples old. He befriends an elderly magician, a slightly senile resident who is tormented by thoughts of the deceased wife he abandoned but still loves. Through their involvment with the old man the boy and his family learn some lessons about life. The ending is very sad, a little hopeful, and veryuplifting without being at all schmaltzy and the film is leavened at intervals with some great black humour.

A nice little film. Michael Caine's 'Clarence' is a grumpy yet charming character, and although the friendship between him and Edward is obviously set to happen, it's not a cheesy best friends from the start kind of friendship.

I liked the 80's setting, and thought this worked well with the story.

It was a little drawn out in places, but that doesn't take much away from the film. Even though a lot of the subject matters are serious and sad, these are tackled in a way that keeps them real but has a lot of nice delicate moments and a few laugh's thrown in for good measure.

The ending was a good balance of not being a straight forward 'happy ending' but being hopeful.
