Fun for boys and girls... this is quite good..

Not being a huge huge fan of the american college boy vs geeky pretty girl movie, I wasn't really expecting much from this but there wasn't much else on. OK it's a rom-com, and it's not Sleepless in Seattle, but guess what, it is good... in fact it is very very good. The boy into girl body and vice versa plot has a good few laughs, but the romantic element also works really well, and has a bit more to it than a run of the mill Porkys type affair. This is a definate recommended watch - especially fun for a date movie, or a bit of fun. Give it a go.

    Another weak body-swap comedy

There's a scene early in the movie when the 27-year-old 'teenage' girl sits in her bedroom listening to Elton John and reading Romeo and Juliet, and I thought to myself, how does crap like this get made?

Fast-forward (at times literally) to the end credits, and it turns out the movie is financed by a Mister Elton John. So at least one mystery is solved.

    A few mysteries remain, however.

How could anyone cast the freakshow that is Sharon Osbourne in an acting role? And while I understand that the 'kids' are always played by older actors, the token black guy here looks like he's about 45. Honestly, the middle-aged 'seniors' on Smallville look fresh-faced and youthful compared to this geezer.

To be fair, once the leads have switched bodies, there are a few passable (and quite adult) gags along the way before the whole things lumbers towards a humourless and predictable conclusion. Once you've seen fifty romcom prom nights, you've seen them all.

Aside from Borat, I can't recall one decent comedy this year. This movie hasn't changed that.

    New DVD roundup

    • 31 Aug 2007

Britain has hardly had a summer this year and it looks to be over already - but have no fear as there's a host of new DVDs perfect for a cosy night in. If comedy is your thing, try It's A Boy Girl Thing or Wild Hogs. The former stars Samaire Armstrong of The OC in a body-swap farce and the latter is about a bunch of middle-aged men on a road trip. One of this year's most dazzling sci-fi adventures is Sunshine, another new release on DVD. Directed by Danny Boyle, it tells the action-packed and... Read more
