    Happy fun

I generally don't like old films. I've got nothing particularly against them, I just don't find them very interesting. I was vaugely disappointed, then, when a friend brought this round to watch one Christmas.

I was really suprised to find that it was a great film and, regardless of it's age, still great to watch and with a lot to say.

If you're like me with old films, you should still try this out. I really doubt you'll be disappointed.

    Walk into the Light!

Have you ever had those dark depressing moments where you have wondered why int he world you are here? Thoughts which simply drag you down and in turn conjure up further reasons for the uselessness of your life.

This movie explores these issues, and gradually leads you out of the darkness into the light. On the surface this seems like a simple tale of a good hearted guy who has a bad time and gets rescued from it. On a deeper level however it tackles the number one cause of apathy and depression: the belief that our lives do not amount to much and we are useless cogs in society. This film will help everyone to understand that no matter who we are, we do impact on other people in subtler ways than we ever thought possible. Its always a good thing to revisit this fact through this film. We will all go through periods in life which mimic the mental state of the main character who thinks of suicide. Yet we do not always have a friend on hand to lead us out through such states. But what you can have is this film... the memory of this film to remind you that you are a person, and your life does matter. A great film to watch wherever you are in life.. it never hurts to remind yourself of the uniqueness of yourself and your beneficial impact on other people.

James 'Possibly the Greatest Ever' Stewart!

The 'feel good' movie of 'feel good' movies. A marvellous performance by (when you consider the prop's available at the time) perhaps the greatest actor ever.

    No thanks

I realise this won't affect the average rating much - there are so many 4 and 5 star reviews here, but please think twice before renting this - unless you're having trouble sleeping.

    It's good to be exploited

This is a horrific film whose message is if you're a nice person you just have to sit back and take the exploitation and manipulation of the people and world around you and that you should be happy that you are of use to them.

Will Bailley is a thoroughly nice guy, eager to please his friends and relations and with a definite plan in life but through continual exploitation, manipulation and emotional blackmail he is walked all over by those around him all his life taking advantage of his good nature. They force him to forgo seeing the world, forgo realising any of his dreams, they force him to take care of them without considering what he wished to do.

When Bailley is faced with this disappointing exploited life and contemplates escape from this prison of helpfulness he is basically told that he should just be happy that other people have found him useful and leave it at that.

This is not a nice film. Not nearly. It is a propagandist film telling the hordes of poverty line workers of the 40's to be happy with their lot, to be happy that society has a use for them on the grindstone of industry.

A movie to make you smile!

What a lovely movie. I had always heard of it but never seen it and I thought it was about time that I took a look to see why it is rated so highly in the movie world. I was pleasantly surprised. It truely is a classic and sometimes you have to say, they simply don't make movies like this anymore. The story was different to what I expected, but in a good way. I had the hugest grin on my face at the end that couldn't be wiped away. A true classic that really should be watched by all - with a lovely moral behind it!

It 'Was Not Such' a Wonderful Life

Very disapointing . Recently hyped up on TV as a very uplifting film .. Cary Grant .. wonderful man .. story .. very wonderful .. but why so dissapointing .. the film quality .. last time I watched it was on TV .. most prob a B&W TV . This DVD film was so 'poor' in quality compared to anything we have watched on DVD it was a turn off within 15 minutes . Not sure what we expected but just very dissapointing ... sorry .. ps I was nagged by her indoors to actually get and watch this but she lost the plot within 5 minutes ..really needs a techi upgrade foe such a classic

    Yuck!

I am another of the dissenting voices - this film is not worth watching - I only got ten minutes into if before I turned it off! My main reason for renting it was because it was the favourite film of Lister from Red Dwarf. I've seen enough to realise that the film is not worth watching.

    A Seasonal Tearjerker

Like 'The Great Escape' Christmas isn't Christmas without Jimmy Stewart and his Angel Clarence. This is a must watch film if only to get in the mood of 'Good Will To All Men' - even Mr Potter.

I have no doubt that I will be looking on the rental site for this one again next year!
