Oliver Stone's self-proclaimed 'countermyth', JFK mocks the doubtful veracity of the Warren Commission's findings on the Kennedy assassination and summarizes some of the myriad theories that have been proposed in its stead. Focusing on the investigation by New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison into the activities of the FBI and other government agencies as well as their attempted cover-ups, Stone weaves fact and speculation into a compelling argument for the reopening of the case files.

It's pretty clear that what we have here is an overblown and factually shaky version of the events surrounding the assassination of John F Kennedy. It's also more than obvious that director Oliver Stone takes his self-appointed position as the chronicler of recent US history far too seriously to be objective or concise. Yet, before you dismiss this review as just another conspiracy against Stone and his star Kevin Costner, let's remember that the cover-up theory has lost none of its fascination more than 30 years after the event. Whether you believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone on 22 November 1963 or whether you adhere to the accomplice theory, this is a compelling and persuasively staged conspiracy thriller. Stone himself doesn't go along with all of New Orleans DA Jim Garrison's conclusions, massaging the facts here and there in the interests of drama and his own suspicions. But what's so remarkable about the film is how deftly Stone conveys such a wealth of information and how he manages to ensure that every character makes an impact, no matter how short their screen time. The Oscar-winning photography and editing are superb, and the ensemble is a triumph of casting. A clear case of unmissable cinema.
Stone goes for the gut, but the complexity of theories surrounding the Kennedy assassination might have benefited from... read more on Time Out
Director Oliver Stone has made many brilliant films throughout his career but as far as im concerned JFK remains his masterpiece.
A compelling and gripping account of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and DA Jim Garrison's (superbly played by Kevin Costner) attempt to bring those responsible to justice will have you stuck to your seats as the film delievers shocks and surprises in spades.
Stone masterfully populates his movie with an all star cast (joe pesci, kevin bacon, michael rooker, wayne knight, jack lemon, are a few) to deal with the many characters that wave in and out of the story. If this is done wrong, it can distract the audiences from the main story but not here.
Stone also gives it a documentary feel by using grainy home videos that make up many of the montages in the film.
The only disappoint comes at the end. Although I won't spoil it for those who havent seen it, JFK is still a must see film.
And there are no extras. Not even a trailer. You can expect a special edition anytime soon in the near future.
After watching the film you realise how much control the government has, making you think even about events that happen this present day.
Superb acting along with the basis on a most probible true story and facts, opens your eyes to the facts of the JFK assasination.
Even to this day confidential reports are held that would shed light to what happened, but will not be released.
This film enlightens your thinking making you realise that what you are told is not always true even if it is your own government.
All in all a superb film, takes a while to get in to but worth while when it comes together at the end
