Tom Cruise IS Jack Reacher.By Andoverian (49 reviews) from Andover , 03 Jan 2013
[Highly rated reviewer]Being just a casual fan of Lee Childs' Jack Reacher novels, I was quite open-minded about Tom Cruise pulling this off. My wife however, has read all the Reacher novels and short stories compared to my meagre 4 count at the time of typing this review, and was appalled by the decision for Cruise to portray the ex-military policeman. Does he pull it off? Apart from his size (Reacher is a massive, barrel-chested bruiser in the books), I think he does. He certainly does the no-nonsense style and serious look you would expect from this military genius, and he does look and act hard as nails. The story is a decent enough crime thriller. There's enough plot machinations to keep you thinking throughout and it's all interspersed with plenty of Reacherisms to keep the fan-base happy. Cruise interacts well with British-posh-bird-playing-American-lawyer Rosamund Pike, and there's enough chemistry to keep you wondering if they'll get it on or not, or is it strictly business. There's a couple of stand-out scenes; the very start where random innocents are gunned down by a sniper, then half way through when their deaths are shown again through Reacher's sleuthing - both scenes are quite powerful and shocking. Then there's an assault rifle shootout that hasn't been this good since Heat, and a fist fight in the rain to rival Riggs and Mr Joshua in Lethal Weapon. I'm hoping this film will be a success, to pave way for more exploration of Reacher and to explain why he is the way he is, and what his motives are. There's plenty of source material to continue this franchise - whether Tom Cruise can commit to lots of them remains to be seen. For the moment though, he's off to a decent start and he's converted my wife into agreeing that Tom Cruise IS Jack Reacher.

Book to Film, rarely a good thingBy a customer , 01 Jul 2013going from a book to film, is not always a good idea, as they rarely receive good reviews from people who have read the books (including Myself), but this was not a bad effort, even with Tom Cruise as lead
Just ok bring your pillow if your anyway tiredBy a customer , 01 Jul 2013Had to watch it twice as i fell asleep the first time not uncommon with myself Not sure if it was the beer or the movie though Not a bad wee flick but just didnt warm to Tom Cruise in this role not very beleivable and i generally like TC movies Without getting into to much detail it has a few unexpected twists and turns bit of sideways driving in americian muscle cars and a bit of mixed martial arts where the 5ft 6 lead throws alot of big guys about like rag dolls If thats your thing give it a blast
Not like the booksBy a customer , 29 Jun 2013Not great if read the books, Tom Cruise is not a good choice for Jack Reacher. Very disappointing, even if he does his own stunts.
Not great, awful if you've read the books.By IamClarkey (1 review) , 28 Jun 2013
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideTo start with I dont usually feel the need to write reviews for films but this one needed doing. I'm a big fan of the books so was dubious at watching this. However being a fan of Mr Cruise I thought I would give it a go.
As a standalone film it is tolerable. There is some action, some fighting and occasional witty banter and humorous moment.
Unfortunately Tom cannot play Reacher. He supposedly got the role, not for physical attributes but for his ability to portray the characters other abilities.
This does not happen. They show you at the very onset who the sniper is and who is getting framed for it. Jack is supposed to work this out as he's so clever but as we've already been shown the guys innocent it all seems a bit trivial and pointless.
Tom struggles to pull of the indifference and morality of Reacher and the fight seems are just comical at best. Even if you had no knowledge of the books (not necessarily just the one the film is based on) I can't see where the attraction or entertainment comes from.
You're shown the bad guy, the fall guy and the hero in the first 5 minutes. The rest is just filler to hold off the inevitable gun fight and Reacher victory.
If you've read the books I'd avoid this film. If you've no idea who Reacher is it will pass some time, although that time would be better spent buying the first book (killing floor, for about £3.50) and starting at the beginning and discovering who Reacher really is.
My Wife Stayed Awake!By adam69 (11 reviews) , 28 Jun 2013Story line is very easy to follow. My wife stayed awake throughout which is always a good indicator. So I would say worth a watch.
