Tom Cruise IS Jack Reacher.By Andoverian (49 reviews) from Andover , 03 Jan 2013
[Highly rated reviewer]Being just a casual fan of Lee Childs' Jack Reacher novels, I was quite open-minded about Tom Cruise pulling this off. My wife however, has read all the Reacher novels and short stories compared to my meagre 4 count at the time of typing this review, and was appalled by the decision for Cruise to portray the ex-military policeman. Does he pull it off? Apart from his size (Reacher is a massive, barrel-chested bruiser in the books), I think he does. He certainly does the no-nonsense style and serious look you would expect from this military genius, and he does look and act hard as nails. The story is a decent enough crime thriller. There's enough plot machinations to keep you thinking throughout and it's all interspersed with plenty of Reacherisms to keep the fan-base happy. Cruise interacts well with British-posh-bird-playing-American-lawyer Rosamund Pike, and there's enough chemistry to keep you wondering if they'll get it on or not, or is it strictly business. There's a couple of stand-out scenes; the very start where random innocents are gunned down by a sniper, then half way through when their deaths are shown again through Reacher's sleuthing - both scenes are quite powerful and shocking. Then there's an assault rifle shootout that hasn't been this good since Heat, and a fist fight in the rain to rival Riggs and Mr Joshua in Lethal Weapon. I'm hoping this film will be a success, to pave way for more exploration of Reacher and to explain why he is the way he is, and what his motives are. There's plenty of source material to continue this franchise - whether Tom Cruise can commit to lots of them remains to be seen. For the moment though, he's off to a decent start and he's converted my wife into agreeing that Tom Cruise IS Jack Reacher.

Not a film for Reacher fansBy a customer , 26 Sep 2013Any one who is a Reacher fan will tell you TOM CRUISE IS NOT JACK REACHER (I wonder if anyone else has made that observation!) The film is a straight forward Hollywood action film no better or worse than any other, the only correlation between the Lee Child novel 'One Shot' and this film is the names of the characters and the outline of the plot.
A little Jack Reacher is not a bad thing!By tallan (60 reviews) from Hampton, England , 18 Sep 2013Much better than I thought it was going to be, given the peculiar casting of the diminutive Tom Cruise as the larger than life Jack Reacher. But it seemed to work well. I've read the book, and even though it didn't follow it precisely, it was a good effort and I look forward to some sequels.
Pleasantly surprisedBy a customer , 18 Sep 2013I don't particularly like Tom Cruise, but wondered what they would do with this one. Turned out pleasantly surprised. From the trailer it looked like another explosion-ridden Cruise vehicle, but there were less special effects and more story than I'd expected, which I was pleased about.
Choose CruiseBy keris100 (14 reviews) from Gloucester , 15 Sep 2013Haven't read any Jack Reacher books and not a big Tom Cruise fan, but I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Good plot that guided the viewer through twists and turns as the mystery unfolded. Mr Cruise fortunately didn't bring his self-satisfied grin to the set which improved my enjoyment of his performance; and, although there were no great demands upon his expressive and emotional acting skills, (the film didn't require it) he brought the right blend of determination and understated grittiness to the role that meant Tom Cruise did not dominate the film but instead you were engaged with Jack Reacher as the plot unfolded. Enjoyable.
solid entertaining action flicBy davidginsberg (114 reviews) from London , 12 Sep 2013: this Tom Cruise vehicle got some of the stinkiest reviews I have ever seen for a big budget star vehicle. They seem to be split three ways between fans of the books who felt the adaptation was an aberration, people who took almost violent exception to Tom Cruise and the final third who found it offensively banal. Well in my opinion they are wrong, this is a pretty good action thriller. Its no great piece of art and we have possibly seen this done before but it does what it says on the tin. It sets up a mystery in this case a supposedly indiscriminate mass shooting, introduces a mysterious protagonist/antagonist in the guise of Tom Cruises Jack Reacher and sets him to work finding out what happened. Cruise is actually very good here, playing an anti hero with the accent very much on anti. You have decent support from Richard Jenkins and Rosamund Pike who bring polish to what is a pretty silly plot at times. When it is mean and gritty it is very good when it gets a bit scobby doo towards the end it veers into the ludicrous. I appreciate many dont care for Cruise and his associated baggage but he remains a proper movie star who can raise adaptations of trash novels like this to something very watchable.
