This movie is centered around a villager who has just arrived in Calcutta at night time and is thirsty. His wanderings into the night in search of water and showing the various types of people that this society is made up of makes this one of the best movies of Raj Kapoor. This is a must watch movie for all serious movie lovers.- Was this review helpful to you?

By a customer from UK , 23 Jun 2008This is a thrilling movie of events which happen in a space of just a few hours in Kolkata. Raj Kapoor is the son of a poor farmer who comes to the city from a village, in the early hours of the morning, seeking work and more importantly, just a drink of water. When he is attempting to drink from a dripping pump, he is spotted and this sets off increasing hysteria and fear amongst the residents of a nearby block of apartments. Along the way, the simple, gentle and generous villager witnesses many of the apartment's crooks at work.
Impressively, the film raises many laughs and manages also to convey the darkness of the unfriendly city. Light does appear, and it's especially welcome in the shape of Nargis whose brief appearance is nevertheless a memorable one.
This is not a typical Raj Kapoor film. Perhaps that's its unique charm. It is, in short, one of the all-time finest Bollywood dramas.- Was this review helpful to you?

Classic
By Rakesh Prasad from Kilmarnock, Scotland , 11 Mar 2006Excellent movie with a great moral to it. Its a sort of a tragedy presented in a comic format. Raj Kapoor is at his best.- Was this review helpful to you?

cringeworthy
By a customer from Aberdeen, Scotland , 03 Jan 2006A toxic combination of poor man's Charlie Chaplin and bottom shelf Stan Laurel. Just hit yourself over the head instead.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not your typical modern indian film at all!
By a customer from Rickmansworth, UK , 04 Jul 2005A poor man wanders into an apartment block whilst being mistakenly hunted down as a thief. He stumbles into a number of different homes trying to escape, and experiences all different types of depravity...drunkeness, gambling , counterfeiting, fornicating....amusing and sad at turns.- Was this review helpful to you?
