The taste of ham...
By Ilias from West Midlands , 04 Feb 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
The movie characters have lives more tangled than in soap operas. The plot is horrendously implausible; the cinematography poor and the sex gratuitous. And yet this is a fun film. Sylvia is pregnant with the child of the rich boy Jean Luis, who is also sleeping with her mother Carmen who owns the local bordello. Carmen, it is said, has been with Luiss father sometime in the past. Luiss father finds Sylvia agreeable, very agreeable. His mother Conchita, however, does not share the enthusiasm of the male members of her family for Sylvia and her mom. So she hires Raul, who models underwear (the Luiss familys business) to seduce Sylvia. He succeeds in seducing not just Sylvia but Conchita as well. So the whole movie romps along with everyone screwing everyone else, literally & figuratively. And yes, Jamon Jamon, means Ham, Ham and Sylvias breasts are supposed to taste like ham.

By Alee86 (6 reviews) , 11 Mar 2013[Highly rated reviewer]
I found the whole film a bit too strange and highly focused on sex. I did not get much from it and when it finished, felt very disappointed.- Was this review helpful to you?

Tortilla anyone?
By SilentTalkie (13 reviews) , 03 Mar 2013Made in the style of a Greek Tragedy gone wrong, the story is not so much of a love triangle, but more of a hexagon with Oedipal overtones. The film is completely and hilariously over-the-top as any good Spanish movie should be; very enjoyable with a great deal of ham-related incidents throughout. Even the end cast list is rather humourous with they two mothers being billed as 'la puta madre' and 'la madre puta' :-)- Was this review helpful to you?

By thom-mck (15 reviews) from Wellingborough , 06 Sep 2012Guaca!
A crazy spanish sopa opera that I couldn't figure if it was trying to be a satire, a comedy or serious. I can't say I'd recommend it but it was quite enjoyable to see something so bonkers- Was this review helpful to you?

Beautifully cured
By RichPickings (167 reviews) from 'kin Bruges , 06 Feb 2012Superb. A film with spirit. Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem slumming it in a dusty landscape, before interstellar stardom. Has loads of the right ingredients, not least of which is boldness. Bigas Luna's direction is restrained by his standards, so this is just over the edge, not screaming. It has images that sear themselves onto your eyeballs, longing and romance, smashed to pieces by a huge leg of pork. A fantastic feel for rural despair and a flair for hissey fits. Unsurprisingly, the acting is top notch. Fan-tastic.- Was this review helpful to you?
