Sharply paced, reasonably faithful and superbly staged Hollywood version of Charlotte Brontė's archetypal romantic novel which stimulated so many imitations, including Rebecca.
It might be a black and white version of Jane Eyre, but i think it is a fantastic version. The characters are played brilliantly by Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine. Even the short appearance by a very young Elizabeth Taylor is fantastic. Hope you enjoy it as much as I always do. Can never get enough of this version.
Although there is a huge chunk of the book missing in this adaptation (namely the episodes with St. John) its still not a bad version saved by the fact that both Joan Fontaine and Orson Wells are amazing actors who portray their characters very well. In fact, I think Wells really epitomises Mr Rochester - not very handsome but enigmatically charming. Subsequent Rochester's - Timothy Dalton and Toby Stephens are just too 'pretty' for the role. The relationship between Jane and Rochester is well crafted. All in all a charming movie.
