I'm a big fan of the original so hired this, several aspects of the story have been changed from the original but this is a pretty good outing which should please fans of the original as well as people who liked things like clash of the titans and the old sinbad movies
I suppose that it is inevitable that comparisons will be made between this production and the 1964 film, which featured the sfx of Ray Harryhausen. It would probably be a mistake, as the 1964 film was a fast paced production designed to tell a swashbuckling story for a family audience, whereas this is a more sedate (and about twice the length!) and serious version for an adult audience. As such there is more depth to the tale, and the film uses a mixture of established actors and unknowns, but the sfx are quite good for a TV production, the CGI monsters similar to 'Walking with dinosaurs' sort of quality. My main moans would be with the DVD issue itself, as it is in 4:3 mode only and despite the length, there are no natural breaks, and you have to use the chapter stops. The film was originally a mini-series in the US, so why couldn't we have the episode options? The US DVD release also had a featurette on the making of the series, but there are no extras at all on the UK release.
I am always concerned about watching a remake of a film that I have enjoyed, they do not always come up to the mark but not so with this one.
Many excellent effects with mythological creatures and the story was fast paced and had all the elements of a good adventure.
Definitely one to watch again and again, escapism at it's best.

i really enjoyed this film and didnt seem to be 3 hours long
i enjoyed this very much and the hours just flew by give it a shot it is really rather good.
Good family movie, remake and a good one at that, worth watching
For an International production this TV movie is surprisingly good. This version only takes a few detours from the original myths, mainly in setting up Dennis Hooper as the 'bad guy' Pelias but on the whole is quite faithful. Also the sets and costumes are quite accurate for late Mycenaean Greece. The mix of characters works well with a black Orpheus and the female Atalanta recruited to the crew to add a bit of diversity. 'Medea' in particular gives a sterling performance that overshadows a disappointingly wishywashy Jason: one feels she would have eaten him for breakfast and picked her teeth with the bones. The story is more in depth than the original as you would expect but the three hours seems to go by surprisingly quickly. The special effects can't quite recreate the magic of the 1962 version with Ray Harryhausen's animations but it does a pretty good job thanks to Jim Henson's Creature workshop. My only problem here is that the 7-headed Hydra was reduced to a single headed lizard - perhaps they ran out of money at this point!
An average version of the original, which takes a lot of beating. Jason is depicted as a rather weak character in this version which spoils the film somewhat. The harpies are great though and the bull well... Our 9 yr old son enjoyed it but still prefers the original!
If you want to know the basic Jason and the Argonauts story then you'll find it all here but it is sadly let down by an uninspiring hero, generally unemotive acting and a monotinously slow pace. Stick to the original.
this is soo insuiting to the Regional janson and the argonauts:I got that angey watch
this that i found the guy wote the script and had a go
