The spirit of Jason Voorhees is whisked back to Crystal Lake via a series of deadly soul transferences in director Adam Marcus's affectionate milking of FRIDAY THE 13TH. Hewn from the previous eight chapters, it's cleverly turned inside out for a new, improved joy ride. Marcus delivers the slasher goods and supplies edge-of-the-seat thrills on a par with the original film in this witty and inventively shocking sequel that's shot through with gleaming style and shrewdly lubricated with grisly gore. The supernatural jumping-off points, only hinted at prior to this episode, bring a fresh dimension to the Jason myth. Watch out for Freddy Krueger's surprise appearance.
The series ends, but does not even manage a whimper on the way out; it simply fades away into witless, boring nonsense. The most frightening moment comes at the end, with the hint that he and Freddy, hero of the Nightmare on Elm Street series, may
This is the 9th film in the long-running Friday The 13th series. By this point the premise for the films has become well established. I'll try to avoid ruining too much of the back story for anyone who has yet to see the early films.
The Basics: Jason Voorhees was drowned as a boy at Camp Crystal Lake in 1957. Ever since he has been terrorising locals and visitors alike. Most usually this involves sex/nudity and some inventive (and hilarious) death scenes for the unwitting teens who keep on flooding to the doomed town.
It is no secret to say that at the end of previous films (excluding Part 5) Jason has been 'killed' only to be resurrected for subsequent movies (with ever more implausible excuses).
This time around however there is no attempt to reason for Jason's return from the seemingly terminal decline at the end of Part 8 (...Manhattan). This film, however, does go on to explore the legend of Jason Voorhees and the supernatural element to his immortality.
However this explaination is far from satisfactory and only further compounds the fall from first films. What is left is a continuation of the 'slasher flicks' that were so popular in the 80's (see also Nightmare On Elm Street and Halloween).
If you are looking for good acting/script or a twisting, clever plot then this may not be for you. For fans of the series this is more of the same by the director of the first (Sean S. Cunningham) and gives some history (sorely missing since Part 2) to one of cinema's most iconic creations of the past 30 years.
Watch out for a final scene that whets the whistle for Jason's most recent outing.
I liked this one, it had a nice cheesy 80's feel to it which I like in movies. It's the usual Friday 13th story though. Save for when you're really desperate.
Sales of ice hockey masks are set to shoot up with the announcement that Michael Bay is to make a Friday The 13th prequel. Bay, director of The Island, Pearl Harbor and Armageddon, is no stranger to horror remakes as he was behind the new versions of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Amityville Horror. The prequel will be the murderer Jason Voorhees' 13th movie outing with previous sequels including Jason Goes To Hell The Final Friday, Friday The 13th - Part 8 Jason Takes... Read more
