Not even his best friends would argue that Soho devotee Jeffrey Bernard was often rude and obnoxious but at other times he must have been stunningly good company. On one hand a boorish old soak but on the other an incomparable raconteur.
O'Toole really did define this role, lurching around the stage (set as a recreation of Greek Street's The Coach & Horses pub) in a dishevelled suit, recalling tales of lunchtime sessions past, friends gone and a pub trick involving a raw egg, a matchbox, a beer tray, a pint glass of water and a gentleman's moccasin shoe.
Best watched in the early hours accompanied by a good few vodka and tonics and too many cigarettes. If you don't find this funny then you really do need to get out a little more often.
As time travel isn't possible we must live with this DVD recording of an iconic West End performance from one of the most watchable actors of our time. Of course, if theatre isn't your bag then watching a straight forward filmed play might well prove stylistically challenging (it ain't subtle), but for the rest of this is an important record of something special - two hours of O'Toole doing what he does best. What's not to love about that?
