LOVEFiLM Review Jennifer's Body

  • 3 stars out of 5

    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

Diablo Cody, the writer of 2007's hit Juno, penned this comedy about a high-school girl possessed by a hungry demon, starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried.

    [Highly rated reviewer]

This movie, like many movies in hollywood was done just so the beautiful Megan Fox could be a part of it. However, aside from her, the script was not good, as with the filming, and i generally felt very very awkward watching it. I do not in anyway recommend this, it was just rubbish!

  • Shocking...ly bad

For a film with two star leading roles and a soundtrack that kicks a**, this film is beyond disappointing.

It's an original idea but done completely un-originally. I think most the budget must have gone on Megan Fox's salary.

Seriously bad acting all over the place, dodgy script, editing and directing in a lot of places and the film was just lackluster. A few jumps, but not nearly scary enough to be horror, nor funny enough to be a comedy.

This film sucks, just don't bother unless you wanna play 'spot the awesome band song or poster' or stare at Megan Fox's rack.

  • Ok B movie

It's a 'B' move so why expect it to be so much more. The plot is a bit silly, there are plenty of unrealistic gore, clichéd camera shots, dead teenagers and the whole thing is geared around Megan's body really.

but it's not a bad 'B' movie. Watch it with some popcorn and don't set your expectations too high.

This is the genre of film that I wait to see on a TV broadcast rather than risking a miserable time at the cinema, but, having now viewed the movie on Film 4, I wish I had seen it on the big screen.

Karyn Kusama is not the kind of director who worries about how critics receive her work, nor does she care much about the audience reception. She just loves making movies about strong and interesting women, and her track record, though quite short, proves that she has the substance to get her films made just the way she wants.

‘Jennifer’s Body’ has not received much applause, just the way ‘Aeon Flux’ was derided on its release. However, both the films demonstrate an ingenuity the director seems to possess in finding the subjects that really excite her and in expanding them into enjoyable movies with a refreshing twist of originality.

In the case of ‘Jennifer’s Body‘, the genius is in the casting of Megan Fox the sultry pinup, as the voracious victim of a demonic possession, against Amanda Seyfried, the fragile and innocent, and therefore lovable, damsel in distress, with quite explicit undercurrents of passion between the two. And to twist it even more, Fox, despite being a widely desired beauty in real life, becomes repulsively gut-wrenching to look at as the story moves on, making Seyfried even more adorable in contrast.

Therefore, beneath the gore-horror packaging of the film, that is cleverly and manipulatively directed at our present obsession with blood and sex, lies a mockery or a parody of that very obsession, perhaps a contemporary reworking of ‘The Beauty and the Beast‘.

Kusama gets great performances from her largely young cast, most of whom are new to Cinema, and a fairly decent outing from Megan Fox for a change. But, what steals the show and fuses the film together is the assured performance by Amanda Seyfried, one of the most gifted actresses of her generation. A really hard working artist who puts everything she has into her roles, Seyfried has the hallmarks of blossoming into a queen of Hollywood in the near future. Then there is Johnny Simmons, with an uncanny resemblance to Tim Robbins, who proves in this film to be a quite promising young talent to watch.

Jennifer’s Body is not a great achievement in cinema, but the film deserves much more attention and credit than it has so far received, because it is a clever and novel attempt in using an overexploited genre to make a topical statement about our sexual absurdities.
