    [Highly rated reviewer]

Having read the series of books I really enjoyed this film and found that the film characters were a very good portrayal of the characters in the book. Tom Selleck, especially, fitted the image I had created in my mind of Jesse Stone.

Jesse's character is very deep, he has been hurt and is trying to overcome a drinking problem brought on by this hurt. He comes across as not caring much about anything but as you get to know his character you find that the problem is that he cares too much!

Tom |Sellek lacks any lightness in this one, so the purported sexual chemistry that women feel for him is just missing - but that is not at all crucial in this film. i also fear that what is essential is the savvy-ness, the worldy-wise sense that we must feel to believe that he is feeling his way into the big crime he is uncovering. there are all sorts of assumptions about alcohol here and its place in the way this small town works: if you drink with someone else who is an abuser you are therefore bonded; if you push drink on an abuser, you are manipulative; drinking on the job is useful because you are able to be manipulated - and, i have to say, it looks to me all too convincing about the Sellek character and his weather-worn look. drink is the turning point at every stage; i have never seen Baldwin looking so feral and unappealing. the women are all done by - including Viola Davis playing and honest and knowing police discharger. it's sexism that's a function in this film too, not racism. it kind of feels to be a story by numbers. i'd hoped more from Sellek whose work on television in his series was more successful.

I felt this film has been dealt a raw deal on some reviews. It is a slow paced film but very good, I felt. One to be watched when you have an hour and a half to kill. Tom Selleck great as always, and Stephen Baldwin wasn't too bad either!! As for 'Boomer'...he was the best!!

A tired film that plods along, only saved and worth watching because of the acting and charisma of Tom Selleck.

I became a big fan of Tom Selleck when I realised that I had NEVER seen him in any film which I did not enjoy.

    This film was no different.

Although the film is a bit slow in pace, Selleck never the less engages the attention as the detective who has been dumped by his wife, and is now trying to climb inside a whisky bottle.

I look forward to seeing the other Stone films in the series.
