Most helpful review Joan Of Arc - The Messenger

  • The Messenger - Just Short Of Great

    [Highly rated reviewer]

The thing about Joan Of Arc is that while it is a beautiful and enjoyable film, packed with visual flair and wonderful characters, it just falls short of being a masterpiece due to some horrible contradictions in Joan's character.

Whilst occassionaly presenting her as a religious lunatic, Joan on the battlefield is holier-than-thou, never once swinging a sword; prefering to carry her banner into battle.

I suspected as the film was tumbling along that this had much to do with the director, Frenchman Luc Besson, who no doubt would have been sympathetic in his portrayal of a French national hero.

But that said, Joan Of Arc is a fine film, and if you can overlook its flaws, I am quietly confident you'll enjoy yourself very much whilst watching it.

Set in 1430's, yet all the French soldiers speak with such perfect English accents, some would even say, better than the English! Also, the swearing, what was that there for? I'm sure that such language was not used then.

One of the worst films I have ever seen. The best thing about it was the nice wine I drank while watching it. Zero marks for the unecessary rape scene. Order soething else. Life is too short.

I was really looking forward to seeing this film, as I knew it was out there, but it seemed to have vanished. Now I know why! It is so bad! It has so much going for it, but for me it was a disaster, mostly because there was so much that was admirable in it - actors, storyline, battles etc- but it ended up being a big yawn.

It took me 5 goes to get through it! I was determined to watch it till the end - obvious reasons - but the whole film was unbalanced. Far too many battles (look out for cardboard castle...), far too little of the politics that condemned her, unexplained weird people (God? Jesus? Dustin Hoffman!!!!! that was the end for me! Where did he come from???)And Milla has only too basic facial expressions - stunned laughter and stunned.

Good luck if you watch it.

Don't bother with this film. I thought it was going to be a really good film after the first half hour and then it all went down hill and is at least half an hour too long. The only reason I gave it two stars is for John Malkovich. Risible.
