Director Victor Fleming (Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz) had a serious crush on Ingrid Bergman, and, despite the fact that their affair was, shall we say, intercepted by Spencer Tracy on Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Fleming went ahead with this costly farrago, effectively a Technicolored love letter to Bergman, who had played the role on stage. The result brought Fleming to an early grave. It's a comic-strip history lesson so dull and lengthy that it was trimmed down at each screening, its original 145-minute length mercifully eventually cut to around 100 minutes. Only Jose Ferrer as the Dauphin emerges with credit among the over-talky, multi-accented supporting players, but, to be fair, Bergman looks radiant against the cardboard sets. This take on the angelic upstart again proves that Besson is incapable of melting substance into style. His Joan... read more on Time Out
I loved the film; my wife fell asleep after an hour. OK, it's slow going to start with but as it deals with the life Joan d' Arc that's to be expected; especially as the film makers gave themselves 3 hours to tell the tale. It gives a great sense of history (without overdoing the anti-English sentiment). There is action but it's not excessive as the film relies on plot to progress it. It's credible without exploiting the religious aspect and feels authentic. If it was 2 hours long it would rate higher but at 3 hours it's still worth watching.

Two of Britain's acting greats Peter O'Toole and Leslie Phillips are set to star together in a new film Venus. The film, directed by Roger Michell (Enduring Love, Notting Hill), has just started filming in London and tells the tale of two ageing actors. Despite being 73 O'Toole always seems to be working, recently starring opposite Brad Pitt in Troy, as Casanova in the TV series and in the new film version of Lassie. Phillips, who made his name as a lovable cad in films such as Carry On Nurse,... Read more
