Lacklustre
By Melon from East Sussex , 03 Apr 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Once upon a time John Carpenter was the coolest thriller director on the planet. 'Assault on Precinct 13', 'Halloween', 'Escape from New York'. Then came 1982 and he got his biggest budget and made his masterpiece, 'The Thing'. Unfortunately 1982 was the year of 'E.T.' and dark SF was no mans land, so like 'Blade Runner' Carpenter's piece de resistance was roundly damned (although later hailed by the same critics and audiences who shunned it at the time). More unfortunately Carpenter seems to have taken the drubbing to heart as he hasn't made anything half as good since.
I keep on hoping that the next Carpenter release will be a return to form. After all, he's always rehashing the same siege plotline of Howard Hawks' 'Rio Grande', but this is his worst yet. It looks more like an episode of 'Battlestar Galactica' than a cinema release, stinking of TV movie cheapness and lack of imagination, featuring flat lighting, slack editing, state of yesterdays art effects, and stilted acting from a talented cast, who have all been better elsewhere, but here just seem to have given up even trying to make a good movie. Ice Cube's final shot cheesy stare into camera lens is the turd on the icing.
At times this is so bad it actually makes your eyes hurt.- Was this review helpful to you?

Ghosts of Assault on Precinct 13
By Kusanagiguy (101 reviews) from London , 13 Jun 2012shifting the genre to Sci Fi does not mask the fact that this is a remake Assault on Precinct 13 odd that a director would do such a thing to their own movie.
John Carpenter's went from one of the greatest directors around to producing films which can only be described as meh which is exactly what this is.
As a fan of Assault on Precinct 13 I can't really fault the story because it's the same...in SPACE but it's the presentation that suffers
The actors are wooden beyong belief and seem to have removed their souls before stepping in front of the camera which makes its hard to relate to their plight.
The CGI is a little ropey even for the period it was released and the action is poorly strung together
That said this can still pass as forgettable time filler, sure it wont line your dvd shelf but ingnore the legacy of the director and you can enjoy it ...barely- Was this review helpful to you?

How can people invest money and time filming on something like this????
By a customer , 29 Apr 2012Terrible time-waster.
The idea is somewhat cool, but the plot lacks everything. There is action, but it is not exciting at all, just nonsense kickass. There is not thrill, no mistery whatsoever, no horror, no endearing characters, and the kills are really bad. It hurts the eyes, complete no-brainer. How can people invest money and time filming on something like this????
I only recommend it if you are having some sort of mental crisis or brain overload, because it definitely relaxes your neurons. Otherwise, avoid it.- Was this review helpful to you?

Hated it but I am a complete girl...
By a customer , 17 Apr 2012I really didn't like this. I don't like scary stuff but it wasn't that this film was scary and that's why I disliked it. It was a bit lame really. Waste of an hour or so when I could have been doing something else. Like cleaning the oven.- Was this review helpful to you?

Should have stayed on Mars
By a customer , 12 Apr 2012Not a great film. The human hands for a bra was a nice touch (pun fully intended). Far better Mars movies out there.- Was this review helpful to you?
