Slightly disappointing, but great to see
By Shane Brown from Norwich, Norfolk , 09 Apr 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
This concert, recorded at the Montreux jazz Festival in 1994 (what was Cash doing at a jazz festival?) has its good side and bad. This is not Cash at his peak. That would have been back in the late 1960s or the early 1970s. Much of the excitement seen and heard on recordings of earlier shows is often missing here. Cash looks and sounds tired for much of the show - especially when doing the staples of his live act. However, with little concert footage of him available on DVD or video this is a worthwhile addition to the catalogue. What boosts this up to four stars though is the half a dozen numbers from his album of the time, American Recordings. Featuring just Cash and guitar, these are great performances. Far from lively - and often on depressing subjects - but it is in this 20 minute segment that his genius shines through.
The big minus here is the two songs with June Carter Cash. She is also not at here best - and is pretty hard to stomach even when she is.
But this is a new concert to me. I have not seen or heard this one before - and I've seen a fair share of both official and unofficial releases - and so it's a great addition to the catalogue for any Cash fans.- Was this review helpful to you?

Good Show
By a customer from England , 14 Mar 2008The best part of this show for me was when Johnny sings with no band, just acoustic guitar. He does songs from American recordings album, his voice matches the songs perfectly. He is beginning to look more ravaged in this dvd and voice does give up once or twice but I think it makes a change over the normal perfect performances normally seen on dvd. another highlight was him doing Walk The Line as it was done at originally at Sun. His son seems to be bashing away at a guitar in the background for no discernable improvement.- Was this review helpful to you?
