Fans of Rowan Atkinson's rubbery-faced brand of physical comedy will know what to expect from this unassuming slice of slapstick. Based on a character portrayed by the Mr Bean star in a series of Barclaycard adverts, it utilises a very British strain of schoolboy humour to send up another home-grown institution — the James Bond-style super-spy. Atkinson plays the titular hero, an enthusiastic but bumbling intelligence agent appointed to track down those behind the theft of the crown jewels. In a performance comprised largely of facial tics, childish pratfalls and poo jokes, Atkinson manages to bring the simplistic screenplay to life —and even gets the girl (Natalie Imbruglia) in the process. Sliding Doors director Peter Howitt aims the movie directly at family audiences, forgoing subtlety for youngster-friendly sight gags, while the actors — particularly John Malkovich as a French megalomaniac — seem to relish the opportunity to lark around.
Smooth megalomaniac Pascal Sauvage (Malkovich), a French prison construction magnate, feels so much hatred for Britain... read more on Time Out
This dvd of the film with rowan atkinson as johnny english is very funny. The film is full of hilarious jokes and action from start to finish. the classic moments in the film are when Johnny has a fight with himself, accidentally shoots a secretary with his 'pen', gets his tie caught up in the conveyor belt when eating Sushi and having the wrong video shown as Pascal Sauvage prepares to rule the country. My daughter's favourite part was when johnny sings to abba in the bathroom scene.
well worth renting out.
...and if that's what you like, I'm sure you're not going to be disappointed.
I wanted to see if Rowan and co. could surprise me with this release. I'm not a fan of Mr. Bean (though that isn't to take anything away from it) - somewhat purile, jokes telegraphed some years ahead seemingly, though some scenes had me laughing out loud. Maybe I'm too sophisticated in my humour, or maybe I'm not the target audience for a film like this, but on average I smiled rather than guffawed through this one (with more than one cringe at some of the execution, it has to be said). I'm sure afficionados of Mr. Atkinson will sing its praises, and younger audiences will howl with glee at the antics of this inept agent, but not me. Nicely executed stunts and setups, some nice cinematography and good direction make this worth watching even if your not a 'Bean' fan. Natalie Imbruglia is very good in her role, as is the supporting role of Bough, though different from the the role suggested by the original 'BC' adverts. Not one of Malkovich's best roles by far, but refreshingly lighthearted and a well-portrayed and likeable villain!
