Johnny has given up brainspace that his childhood memories occupied in order to save space for his chosen profession. He wants to pull one last job before he retires, and the one he gets is particularly perilous. He's got 48 hours to transport a large load of data from Beijing to the United States--and some futuristic samurai don't want him to make it to his destination! The directorial debut of conceptual artist Robert Longo is full of arresting visuals painting a bleak, yet eye-popping, vision of the future.

Director Robert Longo's turgid sci-fi thriller, based on William Gibson's cyberpunk short story, is cyber junk. Keanu Reeves sleepwalks through the title role as a 21st-century hi-tech messenger who carries top-secret information thanks to a computer chip in his brain allied to bio-enhanced memory cells. Unfortunately, his latest employers have overloaded his cranial capacity to such an extent that his head will explode unless he downloads fast. Empty, flashy and incredibly dull, Longo's unpleasant movie fails to generate any suspense and, worse still, is lamely tarted up with incomprehensible surf-cowboy jargon, gratuitous violence and second-rate special effects.
A cyberpunk thriller that, like every other movie that has attempted to cash in on virtual reality, crashes and leaves only confusion behind.
Of all the films i have seen this rates as moderate. The story is somewhat funny, the effects cost more than a fiver but I am sorry to say that Keanu can and has done better than this. The priest however makes this movie watchable just for its comedy value, the man is so camp and plays the role so well. The movie is also a summer job for the music industry with Henry Rollins (rollins band) and rapper friends in tow.
On the whole as i say its medle of the road in all aspects. Only see this if you are a fan of Keanu and need to tick it of the movie list, otherwise its one to avoid.
If you're a die-hard Keanu fan, this may be enjoyable. Otherwise, it's certainly nothing special. He definitely carries the film, but even as a big fan myself, I didn't particularly enjoy it. A few scenes were slightly over-violent aswell, and although it's still only a 15 cert. it felt unnecessary. In it's favour, it does offer a few fun ideas about what the future may hold. Even so, certainly not one I recommend.
