A Good Stand-Up WastedBy Craig Buchanan from Hamilton, Lanarkshire , 13 Jun 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]I like Johnny Vegas and was looking forward to seeing a good length stand-up show from him, I ended up disappointed. There is very little stand-up and to be honest, only half as much of Johnny in this as there should be. Too much of a 'story' in this DVD detracts from what seems like a good stand-up show.

This should be a required viewing, before you decide whether or not to rent out the DVD. Stewart Lee, the director, said this of the DVD in the above video:
'Most people don't like it, and I think that was part of Johnny's joke. He is often having a laugh at the expense of the world, and of himself, and I think he loved the idea of people, of families who'd seen him on Shooting Stars, buying that DVD as a Christmas Day gift and then watching it, and it being this really rather brutal, depressing sort of thing... with not really any jokes in it, and I think he wanted that.'
This isn't a straight-forward stand-up DVD, and if you approach it like one, you may come away disappointed. The acting is fantastic, you will fall in love with Tony Kenner. There are two extra 20 minute stand-up performances, and a 15 minute slot of cut scenes and outtakes.
Well worth a rent.
Funny GuyBy a customer from Omagh , 11 Aug 2009The bulk of this DVD involves the 'rise' of Johnny Vegas after his fall from comedy genius. The acting is superb and it is easy to loose yourself in this 'riches to rags' story!
The extras with Johnny's stand up is fantastic and an enjoyable departure from the main feature.
Overall a great title and well worth renting.
reviewBy tigger21 (4 reviews) from Glasgow , 24 Jul 2008the stand up bits were ok the rest was bit annoying not his best.
HmmmBy a customer from Bristol, UK , 21 May 2007I agree with most of the reviews here that the film itself (who's ready for ice-cream) is really poor. I can see what they were trying to do, but, just...No.
*However* I do think it may well be worth renting this just for the 'tough crowd' extra. A three hour stand up slot by Vegas, heavily edited down, it shows Vegas at his best. He's got an audience who aren't scared to fight back and is obviously feeding off this to produce some of the best stand up I've ever seen.
He's An Entertainer!By Frenchie from Manchester , 23 Mar 2007Johnny Vegas is one the best British stand ups ever. In the stand up scenes of this dvd you can see his soul bearing persona as he plays off the crowd and uses gigs as therapy sessions. If the stand up was all of this film it would have a fantastic document of his live act, but unfortunatly the is a laboured story added which needs to be fast fowarded through, its amazing that the director Stewart Lee, himself a fine comedian , let that get through the editing room while some of Johnny's best stand up moments are relegated to dvd extras.
